Lesson 9: History and Significant Events of Volleyball

VOLLEYBALL
Volleyball is played by two teams, each component of six players who use their hands to volley the ball
back and forth over the net which is higher than their heads. The objective of the game is to hit the ball over
the net, with certain limitations, before it touches the ground and in such a way that the opponent cannot
return it. The game is started by a server who serves the ball over the net behind the baseline. The rules
require not more than three passes among the players.

HISTORY OF VOLLEYBALL
William J. Morgan of the YMCA in Massachusetts, USA invented the game in 1895. It was originally
called “Mintonette”, a game which was played by batting a ball with a long handled racket over a net strung
seven feet high. Later, A.F. Halsted suggested that the same “Volleyball” be used. The early rules of the game
include a court 50 feet long and 25 feet wide with a net six and half feet from the ground and played in
innings by any number of players on each side.

HISTORY OF VOLLEYBALL IN THE PHILIPPINES

The physical director of YMCA, Elwood S. Brown, first introduced the volleyball to the Philippines in
the year 1910. Filipinos began to play volleyball as a backyard sport and games of beach volleyball soon
followed, according to information from the Philippine Volleyball Federation or PVF. Players hung the net
between two trees. They made up their own rules regarding how many players on each side and how many
times you could hit the ball before sending it over the net.

The Philippine Amateur Athletics Federation adopted volleyball for men as an official event in the
national championships in 1912. In 1913, just one year later, when the Far Eastern Games were held in
Manila, the Philippines won the volleyball championships.

Women soon began playing volleyball and in 1924, at the first national volleyball tournament, the
Philippine Normal School was the champion team. It is the most popular competitive sport for women in the
Philippines. Volleyball is popular in the barrios, towns and cities. The favourable climate makes it possible to
play outdoors much of the year. The game does not require expensive equipment and it can be played by few
or many on a team.

The date July 4, 1961 marks the birth of the PHILIPPINE AMATEUR VOLLEYBALL ASSOCIATION. The
director for the Playground and Recreation Bureau, members of the business community and others gathered
to create and organized volleyball association in the Philippines. It is currently called Philippine Volleyball
Federation. It is affiliated with and accredited by the Philippine Olympic Committee, Asian Volleyball
Confederation and the Federation International de Volleyball.

Lesson 10: Terms, Facilities, Ball and Officials in Volleyball

TERMS USED IN VOLLEYBALL
 Catch – a foul in which the ball rests in the hands of a player and is lifted upward.
 Crossing Space – the crossing space is defined by the horizontal band at the top of the net, the
antennae and their extensions, and the ceiling. The ball must cross to the opponent’s court through
the crossing space.
 Double Contact – an act in which one player hits the ball twice in succession.
 Fault – a playing action contrary to the rules; a rule violation other than a playing action.
 Foot Fault – a foul in which a player steps on or over the end line while serving.
 Interval – the time between sets. The change of courts in the 5 th set is not to be regarded as an
interval.
 Rally Point – the system of scoring a point whenever a rally is won.

FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENT

VOLLEYBALL COURT

NET
1. Dimensions: 1m wide and 9.5m long.
2. Height of net: 2.43m for men and 2.24m for women.
3. Side Markers: a movable band of white materials 5cm wide placed at extremities of the net.

BALL
FIVB regulations state that the ball must be spherical, made of leather or synthetic leather, have a
circumference of 65-67 cm, a weight of 260-280 g, and an inside pressure of 0.30-0.325 kg/cm 2.

OFFICIALS
1. 1st Referee – is in full control of the match and his decisions are final. He declares points and faults,
decides when the ball is dead or in play, and indicates when a point has been made.
2. 2nd Referee – is stationed at the end of the net opposite of the 1 st referee. He will assist in calling
violations regarding positioning, conduct, substitution and interference with play as well as making
decisions in center line fouls.
3. Scorer – who sits near the umpire is incharge with keeping accurate account of the rotation and keeps
time outs for rest or substitutions. At the end of the match he shall have the officials sign the score
sheet.
4. Line Judges – at least two, are placed diagonally in the opposite corners at the right hand side of the
referees. They signal when the ball is in or out, foot faults by the server, and touches of “out” balls by
the team receiving the ball.

Lesson 11: Basic Skills used in Volleyball

PASSING
1. Overhand Pass
The head is back, elbows out, hands up, knees bent and one foot a little bit forward. The
fingers are slightly cupped so that all fingers and thumbs contact the ball at the same time.
The ball never touches the palms. Lay the wrist back and make the palms face the ceiling. The
index fingers and thumbs should form a triangle that you can look through to receive the ball.
The thumbs point to each other. When the ball is contacted, the wrist and knees straighten. A
clear pass can only be made by raising the elbows up and away from the body.
2. Forearm Bounce Pass (Bump)
The forearm bounce pass is used for recovering a loose ball, a hard driven serve received below
the waist.
3. One-hand Bounce Pass (Dig)
The dig is recovery shot used for a ball that is received low and off to the side of a player. The
arm is extended with the hand cupped slightly and the wrist held rigid but flexed. The ball is
contacted squarely with the slight curve of the wrist and heel of the hand. The ball is hit with
just enough force to lift it into the air for the tosser to set. Keep eyes on the ball in order to
contact it squarely.
4. The Net Recovery
A very important skill in volleyball is recovering the ball from the net as it requires quick
reaction. A ball landing near the top of the net will drop almost straight down. If the ball hits
the center of the net, it will rebound out one or two feet before dropping. A ball that contacts
near the bottom of the net will be held by the net momentarily before rolling out and down. The
player then has to watch the ball and quickly determine where to position himself. He turns his
side to the net and crouches in order to contact the ball before it touches the ground. If it is the
second hit, the player should try to hit the ball up and back to avoid hitting the net.
5. Spiking
This is an act of jumping in the air at the net and forcefully hitting the ball down into the
opponent’s court preferably to a spot which is hard for the opponent field. There are two
methods of spiking (a) the standing attack and (b) the running attack. Before the spring is
made and the actual attack of hitting of the ball is made the spiker stands with his left side to
the net, both arms back, knees bent, body bent at the waist and the weight on the balls of the
feet.
6. Blocking
Blocking is a technique employed by one or more players of the defensive side to counter act
the advantage gained by a good spike on the part of the offensive team. Correct timing is
essential in blocking a ball. It is the act of jumping with arms extended straight up and fingers
tensed from a position in front of the ball immediately to the opponent’s court. The spring
should be made with enough distance from the net as they make contact with the ball. After
blocking, the players must quickly assume a defensive position as they may have to play the
ball again as it drops on their side of the court.

SERVING
The serve is a method of putting the ball in play. The server serves at the serving area and hits the ball
with one hand. A good and strong serve is an asset.

1. Underhand Serve
The underhand serve is a good serve for beginners to use. It is a simple way of getting the ball
over the net. The ball is held in one hand and hit by the heel of the other hand. The underhand
serve is generally not as competitive as the overhead pass.
2. Overhead Serve
This serve is harder method of serving although if executed properly may be a source of
earning points. The server stands facing the net with the left foot advanced and the ball resting
on the left hand. Toss the ball up from three to five feet above the head, turn the body to the
right, and put the weight on the right foot with the right leg bent.
