College Students Adapting to Their Course that is Unrelated to Their

Prior SHS Strand

The K-12 program was first introuced by DepEd on the year 2012 and was successfully activited
in the Philippines in the year 2016 (Asian Development Bank, 2023). DepEd wanted to improve and
prepare students for college, which is why this was put into effect. The factors that influences students
in choosing a strand in senior high is interest, career goals, and perceived benefits of the track (Juttler, et
al, 2016).

Taking their respective strands that are related to the courses they will take in college is one of
the requirements for every senior high school student. The aim of every student is to work in fields
related to their college courses. However, there is more noticeable situation where students enroll in
their college courses wherein it is not related in their track or strand of senior high school. Some
students lose interests in their studies during college because of the unrelatedness and mismatched of
their track and course which will be the subject of this study (Quinto et. al., 2020).

In the study that was peviously conucted by Andrada et al (2020) it states that the students of
the first batch from the year 2016-2017 who enrolled in Science, Technology, Engineering, and
Mathematics (STEM) and was graduated in the year 2018 did not all continue to STEM related courses in
college. Despite the benefits given by DepEd to all graduated SHS students, students from the STEM
programme still did not proceed in continuing STEM related courses in college.
