This paper consists of TWO sections, Section A (20 marks) and Section B (20 marks). Some
questions in section A contains parts marked with asterisks (*). In answering these parts, you are
required to give paragraph-length answers. In each of these parts, one mark is allocated to assess
candidates’ ability in effective communication.

(a) Draw the basic circuit diagram inside a thermistor-thermometer. Label all the
essential components in the circuit. (3 marks)

(b) Write down the current reading in the thermistor-thermometer at the (i) lower fixed
point and (ii) upper fixed point. (2 marks)

(i) (ii)
(c) Peter tried to calculate the temperature T when the current reading is 0.04 A by
assuming a linear relationship between current and temperature. (4 marks)
(i) By assuming that the readings at the two fixed points remain the same, draw on
Figure 1 the linear relation between current and temperature.
(ii) Hence, or other wise, find Peter’s estimated value of T.

(ii) Find the percentage error of Peter’s estimated value of T using Figure 1.

(d) State one daily life application of the thermometer. (1 mark)

2. Determine if each of the following statements is true or false. If the statement is false, write
down the correct concepts in the space provided. (10 marks)
True False
(a) Heat always flows from body having greater average kinetic energies of  
molecules to that having smaller.

(b) Two objects in thermal equilibrium must have the same total internal energy.  

(c) When heat is released from a body, its internal energy always decreases.  

(d) When the temperature of a substance is increased, the total kinetic energies  
of its molecules decrease.

(e) The internal potential energy of a solid increases when the average  
separation between molecules in the solid decreases.

(f) Heat refers to the energy stored in a body.  
