- Tag questions:
+ Usage: Use tag questions to confirm information you already think is true or to
encourage someone to make small talk with you.
+ Form: a positive statement + a negative question tag
Eg: You are a student, aren’t you?
A negative statement + a positive question tag
Eg: Mary isn’t a teacher, is she?
Note:
Use the same verb tense or modal in the tag question as in the main statement.
Use aren’t I for negative tag questions after I am
Eg: I’m late, aren’t I?
Use pronouns, not names or other nouns in tag questions
Eg: Hanoi is the capital of Vietnam, isn’t it?
- Past perfect:
+ Usages:
Use the past perfect to describe an action that occurred before a specific time in
the past.
Eg: I had already finished the exam before 10 a.m
Use the past perfect with the simple past tense or the past of be to clarify which of
two past actions occurred first.
Eg: The meeting had ended before she arrived
