Keywords: Semi Magic Square, Magic Square, Recreational Mathematics

A semi-magic square is a square that fails to be a magic square only because one or both of the main diagonal sums do
not equal the magic constant (Kraitchik 1942, p. 143).

Procedure:

1. Create 10x10 Table (row and column).

2. Label each column, A1 to A10. Do the same on each row, B1 to B10.
3. Choose the ten last consonants of the English Alphabet.
4. Choose another two alphabets. One stand as the total sum of each rows and columns and one stand as the
overall summation of the 10x10 table.
For example:
J = total sum of each row or column
U = the total summation of 10x10 table
5. Put designated colors unique for each alphabet.
For example:
P = Light Blue V = White J = Yellow Green
Q = Green W = Brown U = Tan/Flesh
R = Yellow X = Purple
S = Dark Blue Y = Red
T = Orange Z = Black

B4 Y W T X S Z R P V Q = J
B5 T S Y Q P W V Z R X = J
B6 X Z W V R Y Q S P T = J
B7 R V P Z X Q Y T W S = J
B8 S T Q Y W P Z V X R = J
B9 Q P S R V T X W Z Y = J
B10 W Y X T Z S P R Q V = J

6. Choose 10 random real numbers. For example.: 13, 03, 09, 78, 17, 05, 10, 11, 08, 20.
7. Disseminate given real numbers to each letter. Choose either column or row patterns. See Table 1.2
and Table 1.3. Following this rule, S > Z > T > P > X > W > R > Y > V > Q or Q < V < Y < R < W < X <
P < T < Z < S. I call this rule as Odiongan’s Rule.

For example:

13, 03, 09, 78, 17, 05, 10, 11, 08, 20 (Original alignment of random 10 real numbers)

78, 20, 17, 13, 11, 10, 09, 08, 05, 03 (New alignment after using the rule stated above.)

P = Light Blue (13) V = White (05) J = Yellow Green (169)

Q = Green (03) W = Brown (10) U = Tan/Flesh (3 338)
R = Yellow (09) X = Purple (11)
S = Dark Blue (78) Y = Red (08)
T = Orange (17) Z = Black (20)

Note: In this kind of semi-magic square. We are allowed to use any number real numbers: irrational, non-
integer rational numbers, rational numbers (Z), negative numbers, whole numbers (W), natural numbers (N),
decimals, cube roots, square roots, and fractions.

Properties:

1. 10 rows (1x10) and 10 columns (1x10).

2. 10 sets (2x5 rows) and 10 sets (5x2 columns).
3. Both diagonals failed to have the same sums from rows or columns.
