INSTRUCTIONS AND INFORMATION
1. Write your name in the appropriate space on the ANSWER BOOK.

2. This question paper consists of THREE questions. Answer ALL the questions in the
ANSWER BOOK.

3. Start EACH Question on a NEW page in the ANSWER BOOK.

4. Number the answers correctly according to the numbering system used in this

question paper.
5. Leave one line between two sub questions, for example between QUESTION 2.1
and QUESTION 2.2.

6. Show ALL formulae and substitutions in ALL calculations.

7. Give brief motivations, discussions, etc, where required.

8. Write neatly and legibly.

2
QUESTION 1: MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTIONS
Various options are provided as possible answers to the following questions. Each
question has only ONE correct answer. Choose the answer and write only the letter
(A–D) next to the question number (1.1 to 1.2) in the ANSWER BOOK, eg. 1.3 E

1.1 A block is placed on a rough horizontal surface. A force F is exerted on the

block, making a displacement of ΔX.

X
Which one of the following forces does a negative work on the block?
A Applied force F
B Normal force
C Kinetic frictional force
D Weight (2)
1.2 Two boxes X and Y have the same mass. Box X is lifted through a vertical
height h by a force of magnitude F. Box Y is pulled up a slope by a force of
the same magnitude to reach the same vertical height, as shown below.

Which statement is correct?

Change in gravitational potential Amount of work done by F
energy of the boxes
A Is the same for box X and box Y Is more for box Y than for box X
B Is the same for box X and box Y Is the same on X and Y
C Is more for box Y than for box X Is more for box Y than for box X (2)
D Is more for box Y than for box X Is the same on X and Y [4]

QUESTION 2
25 Kg block is moved 5 m a cross a rough horizontal surface by a 90 N force acting at
250 to the horizontal, as shown below.

The kinetic frictional force between the block and the surface is 41,393 N.
2.1 Write down ONE conservative force that is acting on the block. (1)
2.2 Calculate the work done by the applied force. (3)
2.3 Define work energy theorem in words. (2)
2.4 Use WORK ENERGY THEOREM to calculate the total change in kinetic energy
of the block. (4)

QUESTION 3

3.1 A motor of the pump is used to lift 900 kg of water, a height of 50 m from rest at
point A underground to point B at the surface. Water reaches point B at a speed
of 2,0 m.s-1. Ignore the mass of the pump and frictional effects.

3.1.1 Define a non-conservative force. (2)
3.1.2 Use ENERGY PRINCIPLES to calculate the work done by the motor
in lifting water from point A to B. (4)
3.1.3 Calculate the power used to operate the motor for 2 minutes. (3)
3.2 An electric toy car of mass 10 kg, starts from rest and moves a distance of 90 m
up a smooth incline which has a vertical height of 3 m, as shown below

3m

The average driving force on the car as it moves up the incline is 40 N.

3.2.1 Draw a labelled free body diagram for the car on the incline (3)
3.2.2 Use ENERGY PRINCIPLES to calculate the speed of the car at the
end of 90 incline. (4)
