What are the roles teachers should fulfil to successfully manage the

classroom?
To effeiciently manage the classroom the teacher must fulfill several
key roles:
1-a good planner. (In other words, he has to plan his lesson before
introducing it to students and try to simplify its content as much as
possible).
2- a good monitor (that regulates students’ behaviour ).
3-a good motivator (who encourages students to participate in class
and engages them in the learning process).

How to monitor disruptive behaviours in the classroom:


1-establish the code of conduct(formal contract that the teacher
establishes with his students at the first meeting,it includes the
rules of the classroom in which the teacher and students agree on
and promise to obey).
an example of the code of conduct: respect your classmates and
your teacher -work together- keep your class clean-commit and
devote your time to learning-participate in class-don’t make fun
of your classmates- always say ‘’I can do it’’- do your
homework- come on time.
2-know students and memorize their names ( to control the class
and to indicate teacher’s care for his students).
3-be fair(treat your students equally, all of students must be given
the opportunity to answer questions).
4-arrange students’ seating(locate students where they can’t
easily create disciplinary problems).
5-be a mentor : talk the talk and walk the walk(follow the rules- apply
what you promise-build an image of a determined and a hard working
teacher-).
6-talk to disrupters in private.(don’t disrespect them in front of their
classmates).
7-monitor group activities(1-distribute roles within the group:
reporter-timekeeper-monitor. 2-repeat your instructions and explain
them one by one.)
8-engage your students(if they are engaged they will not have time to
misbehave

How to engage students in the classroom?


1- Help students set long term and short term goals( with
focusing on short-term goals as they can be achieved in a
shorter time which will motivate students to continue their
effort).
2- Teachers should work on the atmosphere of classroom:
2.1-keeping the cleanliness and tidiness of the classroom(by
paying attention to the cleanliness of the floor-desks and chairs
should be organized-the curtain tied properly).
2.2-decorating its physical appearance with paintings,
students’ projects and posters (which contain vocabulary or
dialogues).
2.3-building positive relationships with students which is based
on mutual respect.
2.4-creating a supportive and cooperative environment by :
listening to students – delivering positive feedback and
rewards to them - allowing room for mistakes.
(chosing the right way and time to respond or give feedback to
students, focusing on the effort of student rather than his
ability to complete the task).
3- Using various activities in which students can express
themselves (role plays: acting a play or dialogue-simulations:
imitating characters or situations- information gap activities).
4- Providing entertainment (jokes, stories and video clips.)
5- Incorporating tension and challenge by using game-like
activities. (for example: find the clues: teacher provides several
terms or names on small pieces of paper. Working in teams,
one student picks a word and gives their teammates clues
without saying it. Their goal is to identify as many words as
they can. The team that has the most after 60 seconds wins
the round.)
