YEAR 3 GOLDEN NUGGETS

Shake it!
Seven Science Tasks Lesson 1-7

National Curriculum coverage, by the end of the seven sessions:

NC Identify that animals, including humans, need the right types and amount of nutrition, and that they cannot
make their own food; they get nutrition from what they eat

IPC Different kinds of milk

 Skimmed, semi-skimmed, full fat, cows, goats,

NC Compare and group materials together, according to whether they are solids, liquids or gases

IPC Solids, liquids and gases

Materials can generally exist in three states – solid, liquid or gas.

Solid – a material that has a fixed shape and volume.
Liquid – a material that has a fixed volume but can change shape.
Gas – a material that can change in shape and volume.

NC Observe that some materials change state when they are heated or cooled

IPC Changes of state

Water to ice (freezing)

Ice to water (melting)
Water to steam (evaporating)
Steam to water (condensing)

NC Observe that some materials change state when they are heated or cooled

IPC Reversible and irreversible changes

A change that can be reversed back to its original form is called a reversible change.
A change which cannot be reversed is called an irreversible change.

NC Observe that some materials change state when they are heated or cooled

IPC Testing which solids dissolve in milk

Some substances dissolve when you mix them with water/milk. When a substance dissolves, it
might look like it has disappeared, but in fact it has just mixed with the water to make a liquid called
a solution.

NC setting up simple practical enquiries, comparative and fair tests

IPC Carrying out a fair test.

What makes a fair test and when is it impossible to do a fair test.
