SOC 144 [Chapter 3] -Culture

DISCUSSED THE EATING OF DOG MEAT IN SOME OTHER CULTURES

In different countries there will be different cultures. Some culture is normal in one

country but it causes opposition in another. The consumption of dog meat is a topic

that causes heated debate and controversy, especially in Western societies, where it

is considered taboo by many. While some cultures have traditionally incorporated

dog meat into their cuisine, many individuals from countries such as the United

States and Europe strongly condemn the practice. Personally, I feel that

condemning eating dog meat is appropriate in some Western societies, but we

should consider and view this issue in light of other societies' norms, values or

practices.

First, the issue of whether it is appropriate to condemn eating dog meat raises

questions about cultural relativism and ethical considerations. Cultural relativism

holds that the beliefs and practices of a particular culture should be understood and

respected within their own cultural context without imposing external judgments or

values. From this perspective, condemning dog meat eating can be seen as a
violation of cultural relativism, as it involves imposing external moral judgments

on a cultural practice.

On the other hand, there are compelling ethical arguments against the consumption

of dog meat in Western society. As Dogs are often considered companions in many

societies and the act of consuming them can be considered cruel and disrespectful

towards these animals. There are also concerns about health risks associated with

consuming dog meat, as dogs may not be subject to the same strict health and

safety regulations as other pets. It is important to consider whether this culture is

truly beneficial and positive to people's lives. From there, we need to adjust and

maintain cultures suitable for modern society.

Ultimately, the decision to condemn eating dog meat or not depends on the beliefs,

beliefs, and norms of that society. In some countries such as Indonesia where there

is a belief that dog meat, along with pork, is "haram" (ritually unclean), criticizing

the eating of dog meat can be seen as an act of protecting the belief. own

thresholds and beliefs.

In conclusion, the debate surrounding dog meat consumption requires a nuanced

view, taking into account both cultural relativism and ethical considerations. It is

important to engage in respectful dialogue and seek to understand different cultural

perspectives while also addressing the ethical implications of this activity.

However, as a Vietnamese, where there is a diverse culture, I support the

condemnation of eating dog meat. Because dogs can be considered a close and

familiar animal to the Vietnamese people from literature, sculpture, etc. For the

Dao people, the image of the dog is expressed on costumes.
