Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)

➢ Three Main Systems / keywords as per their development

➢ Cruise Control (CC) / Normal Cruise Control - very first ADAS system
➢ Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) – Advancement
➢ Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go feature – further advancement

➢ Cruise Control
➢ It is the ADAS system which can maintain the set speed of the vehicle continuously on road without need of
driver to press the acceleration pedal.
➢ Hence, it helps to remove access stress from driver while driving in long journey especially on highways.

➢ Adaptive Cruise Control

➢ This is add-on feature on Cruise Control System. Here, the ADAS system, can maintain speed as well as
distance to front moving vehicle to maintain safety.
➢ Example: Ego vehicle, set to 100 km/h and the vehicle front safety distance to 100 m.
➢ When the front vehicle will reduce speed, ACC will reduce the speed of Ego vehicle to maintain safety
distance.
➢ When the front vehicle again increase the speed, ACC will increase the speed of Ego vehicle to
maximum of set speed = 100 km/h

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)
➢ Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go feature
➢ Generally ACC is useful above certain minimum speed and will not work when vehicle either moving very
slowly or came to halt in traffic.
➢ In this case, it has to be activated again by driver after reaching to some minimum vehicle speed.

➢ ACC with Stop & Go feature, can help in such cases. When such ACC are activated, they assist drivers
both at high speeds and also at low to zero speeds.

➢ For example:
➢ If the vehicle come to halt completely, the system can automatically start the vehicle forward within 3
seconds, if traffic allows.
➢ If vehicle is in halt more than 3 seconds (the time can vary as per manufacturer), then driver has to
either press the button to reactivate the ACC with stop&go or press gas / acceleration padel.

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)
➢ Sensor in ACC
➢ Generally Long Range Radar sensor is used in ACC
➢ Typical distance – 200 to 250 m
➢ Typical horizontal angle - +/- 4°
➢ Mounted in front middle part of the vehicle (car)
➢ It can detect vehicles, calculate the distance from ego vehicle, measure speed & direction of target vehicle

➢ Some of the new systems, also started suing front camera along with LRR for additional features.

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) – from Continental
➢ The ACC system behaves as a conventional cruise control system in an open lane condition.
➢ When approaching a slower vehicle in subject vehicle path, the ACC system uses the Powertrain and the
Electronic Brake System to adjust the subject vehicle speed in order to maintain the driver selected headway.
➢ Generation 4 includes:
➢ ACC Stop&Go,
➢ Reaction on a priori static objects,
➢ Auto Go (driver confirmation is no longer required within a defined maximum time interval for drive off
from standstill),
➢ External Speed Assist Input.
