Rear Cross Traffic Alert

➢ This ADAS system is helping specially when reversing the vehicle to take
it out from the parking place.

➢ In such condition, the perpendicular traffic, like moving vehicles, people

walking around, passing bicycle, etc. is difficult for the driver to see from
the side mirror as it is occluded by other parked vehicles.

➢ RCTA uses rear corner mounted short range or mid range radar sensors
which cover the FoV of the rear side of the vehicle to detect the objects
(cars, pedestrians, bicycles, etc.) and alert the driver (using audio / visual
warning) if the object is very close and moving towards the ego vehicle.

➢ If needed, some systems can even intervene and apply brake to avoid rear
collision.

➢ Depending upon the company, this ADAS function can detect upto 20 to
50 m of the rear corners to alert the driver.

Rear Cross Traffic Alert
➢ Once the driver has switch ON this ADAS function in vehicle, then RCTA
is activated automatically by vehicle when it is in reverse mode.

➢ How they alert driver ?

➢ By visual Warning
➢ On dashboard
➢ Rear view mirror (left or right side)
➢ Side mirror (left or right side)
➢ By sound from rear side of vehicle

➢ Depending on the manufacturer and vehicle, some RCTA may be able to

detect pedestrains and bicycles properly and some may not.

➢ In some of the systems, even ultrasonic sensors of the vehicle may use for
this ADAS function. But mostly Radar is preferred.

Rear Cross Traffic Alert
➢ Challenges in RCTA Efficient functioning

➢ Speed Limit of detection for target objects.

➢ For example, in some systems, rear cross traffic alert can only detect objects between speeds of 3
and 30 kmph.
➢ If an object is moving too fast or too slow, rear cross traffic alert may not detect it
