REFRIGERATION AND

AIRCONDITIOINING
Faculty: Mohammed Riyas
When two quantities of air having
enthalpies and different specific
humidities are mixed , the final
amount of air mixture depends upon
the masses involved and the
Mixture of Air Streams enthalpy and specific humidity of
each constituent masses
VENTILATION AIR

❑ It is amount of fresh air which is supplied to Air conditioning in order to maintain the
purity.

Room Sensible Heat Factor

It is defined as the ratio of room sensible heat to room total heat.

Grand Sensible Heat Factor:

It is defined as the ratio of total sensible heat to grand total heat.
RSHF AND GSHF

.
ALIGNMENT CIRCLE

❑ It is the state corresponding to 260C DBT and 50% RH

SUMMER AIR CONDITIONING WITH VENTILATION AIR WITH BYPASS FACTOR
SUMMER AIR CONDITIONING WITH VENTILATION AIR WITH BYPASS FACTOR

RSHF Line : It is obtained by joining the supply

condition to room with the inside condition of air.

GSHF Line: It is obtained by joining the inlet condition

and outlet condition of cooling coil.
SUMMER AIR CONDITIONING

The outside air flows through the damper and

mix it up with the recirculated air ( obtained form
the conditioned space ) .The mixed air stream
passes through the filter to remove dirt ,dust and
other impurities. The air now passes through the
cooling coil and the cooling coil has a
temperature much below the required dry bulb
temperature of air in the conditioned space. The
cooled air now passes through the perforated
membrane and losses moisture in the
condensed form which is collected in sump. After
that the air is made to pass through a heating
coil which heats up the air tightly to bring the air
to the designed dry bulb temperature and
relative humidity.
WINTER AIR CONDITIONING

The outside air flows through the damper and mix

it up with the recirculated air ( obtained form the
conditioned space ) .The mixed air stream passes
through the filter to remove dirt ,dust and other
impurities. The air now passes through the preheat
coil in order to prevent the possible freezing of
water and to control the evaporation of water in the
humidifier .After that the air is made to pass
through a reheat coil to bring the air to the
designed dry bulb temperature and then supplied
to the conditioned space.
YEAR ROUND AIR CONDITIONING

The outside air flows through the damper

and mix it up with the recirculated air (
obtained form the conditioned space ) .The
mixed air stream passes through the filter to
remove dirt ,dust and other impurities. In
summer air conditioning the cooling coil
operates to cool the air to the desired value
.The dehumidification is obtained by
operating the cooling coil at a temperature
lower than the dew point temperature .In
winter air conditioning the cooling coil is
made inactive and heating coil operates to
heat the air .
COMFORT CHART

❑ Comfort chart is an empirically determined effective temperature index which has been published by
ASHRAE .

❑ Comfort charts are the practical application of Effective temperature.

❑ The chart is made by the evaluation from different kinds of people subjected to wide range
environmental temperature ,relative humidity and air movement.
EFFECTIVE TEMPERATURE

❑ It is the temperature of saturated air at which a person or human being feel same level of comfort as
actual environment.

❑ It includes comfort temperature , air purity , and relative humidity.

❑ The chart is made by the evaluation from different kinds of people subjected to wide range
environmental temperature ,relative humidity and air movement.

Factors Effecting Effective Temperature

1) Climatic and Seasonal difference: People living in colder climate feels more comfortable at lower
effective temperature in comparison to people living in warmer region.
In Summer A/C , Effective temperature is 21.60C
In Winter A/C , Effective Temperature is 200C
EFFECTIVE TEMPERATURE

Factors Effecting Effective Temperature

2) Age and Gender: Child and old age peoples require higher effective temperature (usually 20C to 30C)
in comparison to adults. Similarly women also require higher effective temperature than adults.

3) Kind of Activity : Person who involved in outdoor games , heavy works , dancing , foundry shop
works require lower effective temperature than person who is in rest condition.

4) Density of Occupants: In high density region , requires low effective temperature.

COMFORT AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEMS

❑ In comfort air conditioning systems the air is brought to required dry bulb temperature and relative
humidity for human health comfort .It is always assumed to be 210C DBT and 50% RH

Sensible Heat Factor is given as follows.

❑ For residence and private office : 0.9

❑ For restaurant or busy office : 0.8
❑ For Auditorium or Cinema hall : 0.7
❑ Dance hall : 0.6
