MINUTES OF A MEETING

In our previous meeting held, we discussed the issue of Drug abuse and student support. Mr
Dube who is the chairperson of Student Support Committee stretched out how drug addition
is a disruption to the university and our community. He emphasized the negative impacts
caused by drugs in the life’s of students and society outside.

Ms Botha, a former drug addict and owner of Botha Recovery Centre shared how the centre
is determined to help people battling with substance abuse to start afresh. This centre is also
meant to assist addicts between 13 to 68 years with a free 14 to 21 days stay and this can be
extended on extreme cases. All this services is provided with the help of volunteering
recovering addicts, doctor and social worker.

The SRC committee also shared how this problem has affected some of their friends in the
university and how the recovery centre has helped them. The Student Support Office shared
their discussion of how it would be advisable to work with Botha Recovery Centre on doing
awareness campaigns at the university and neighboring schools.

It was agreed that they will hold seminar once per term to create an awareness on drug abuse,
this agreement includes engaging with neighboring schools and inviting departments to share
information on how they assisted affected students and their families. The students expressed
that they are willing to help at the centre on long weekends and during their holidays.

Mr Dube was excited about the willingness of students. He urged everyone to go and think
of ways to raise funds for the centre, to assist on building a bigger facility and all ideas will
be shared at their next meeting.
