Introduction

NPOs are organisations that serve their members or the general public by focusing on
certain social problems. The organisation’s funds are frequently generated through
donations, fundraising activities, or membership fees. On the 11th of May 2023, I
completed my community service at Marigold Place. The non-profit organization is
situated at 20 and 26 Maartens Street, Langenhoven Park, Universitas Bloemfontein.

The organisation was established on 1 September 2019, to provide 24-hour care to

sick individuals who require assistance. According to the manager, Sister Freda
Garzouzie, (a registered nurse at Medwell Gernessa Homecare), it was her ambition
to provide people with the greatest care at an inexpensive price, although she realised
that there were other care facilities in the neighborhood.

The more people get older, the more susceptible they become to chronic health
conditions. Therefore, Marigold Place cares for individuals suffering from dementia,
stroke, and arthritis, as well as older people who want to leave independently but find
it difficult to manage daily medicine, attending clinic or doctor check-ups, nursing
assessment, and procedure. It also offers palliative care and aid to people who are
healing before returning home. It provides secure and accessible housing as well as
access to support services for active elderly people who are independent but require
some monitoring and assistance with their daily activities.

Goals and mission or/ vision served by Marigold Place

Care for older individuals should ideally be offered in a person-centered manner that
incorporates goal setting. Marigold Place's mission is to preserve the health and well-
being of the elderly, to assist them in caring for minor health problems and long-term
conditions, to ensure that they recover from illnesses and hospitalisation, to assist
residents with personal hygiene and grooming, such as washing, bathing, clothing,
nail and hair care, issue of daily medication, nurse assessment, and treatments, such
as flu vaccinations and wound dressing. Lastly, to care for all individuals, rich or poor,
able or disabled, to provide home care, and to create jobs. The NPO's vision is to be
able to provide good quality and inexpensive care to all individuals by providing a safe

homey environment to live. Thus, the Non-Profit Organization has grown from
personnel members to 50 in 5 and a half years

The Non-Profit Organization's goal is to ensure that all residents, regardless of their
state of health, have a quality of life throughout their senior years, to provide dignity,
comfort, and happiness to the residents, to ensure that all issues are dealt with
immediately, to provide a holistic approach, and, where possible, to have a team of
specialized people to give advice on care such as physiotherapists, occupational
therapists, and. Lastly, to offer affordable residential care for all age groups.

Duties at the organisation and how I executed them

At the Non-Profit Oganisation, I was engaging in social interactions with the residents,
assisting the caregivers by washing the dishes, sweeping and mopping the floor,
making tea, and playing activities with the residents such as coloring and drawing. I
also read books to residents and took them on walks outside to stretch their legs.

What value did I add and who supports the NGO financially

Since there was only one caretaker on duty and they were shorthanded, I provided
value to the Non-Profit Organization by offering an extra hand in terms of cleaning.
The NPO does not receive any financial assistance, but it does receive contributions
such as furniture, clothing, and bedding. It also receives monthly deliveries of eggs,
mince, and wors from other companies and the rest of the funds come from the
residents and outpatients.

During my community service, I learned that the more you participate in community
services, the more you gain a variety of skills that will be helpful and beneficial one
day. Another important life lesson I learned in community service is the value of
humility, participating in community services allows us to work with other individuals
or groups towards a common goal in society. It teaches us that there is strength in
unity and diversity. One of the activities that I enjoyed was reading books to the
residents and making tea for them.

Critical needs for the NPO

The NPO requires critical necessities such as better hospital beds and financial
support such as rent, water, and power because electrical equipment is expensive

and, salaries are difficult to pay with limited funds. Therefore, Sister Garzouzie is
requesting assistance from the public in any way they can. People can donate meat,
veggies, money, or just their time by visiting patients to read stories or chat, buying
groceries for residents who are bedridden, or even just donating a plate of meals.

Conclusion

How can the services of the organisation be improved or restructured

The organization's service can be improved or restructured to be more efficient by

expanding the organization's network and support from other NPOs, which will provide
the organization with the support and sustainability needed to advance, and by
increasing the organization's visibility on social media, for example, by sharing
generated content, sharing content from others, and staying connected with those who
share the same passion as the organization.
