Alauddin's first attack was on the Rajput state of Ranthambore. He then


conquered the fort of Chittor which witnessed the brave act of jauhar by the
Rajput women. Later, the cities of Ujjain, Mandu, Dhar and Chanderi were also

Alauddin was the first Turkish ruler to extend his rule beyond the Vindhyas. He
sent an expedition under Malik Kafur who defeated the rulers of Devagiri,
Warangal and Dwarasamudra in the Deccan region.

Due to the impracticality associated with ruling the Deccan states from far
North, Alauddin did not annex the provinces. He rather forced the rulers to
acknowledge his suzerainty and pay annual tributes which would help him in

Doab region was struck by femine. People refused to pay taxes but the
revenue collectors used force to extract money. To escape this tyranny,
peasants abandoned their lands and fled to forests.

capital failed miserably.

It is not wrong to say that prevailing conditions were a reason for
Muhammad's failure. At the time of his reign, people were backward and
unconvinced of the radical reforms. Even the Ulema was against his ideas.
However, his character played a bigger role in his collapse. Though he was
visionary and progressive, he lacked the intellect to effectively implement the
reforms. He was whimsical and unpredictable. His decisions were not well
researched and he ignored the risks associated with his experiments. His
character was arbitrary and inconsistent in nature which was the major cause
of his decline.
