The weighted mean is a grand mean of means in which the contributions of
weighted by the number of respondents in each group. In computing the weighted
mean ( X ) for those data from a sample group, we shall have the formula below which
is known among many educators.
X=
∑ f i Xi where: X shall refer to the weighted mean
n
f is the frequency
x refers to the weight, and
n points to the number of cases
Example:
Find the weighted mean of the following results of tallies from one of the survey
items in a questionnaire, which sought to determine the 210 respondents’ opinion
regarding the plan of a businessman to put up or open an internet café 100 meters
away from the school. Let us say that the results of survey in the questionnaire are as
follows: Strongly Agree (SA) = 6 responses; Agree (A) = 12 responses; Undecided (U) =
16 responses; Disagree (D) = 105; Strongly Disagree (SD) = 71 responses.
Computation:
X=
∑ f i X i = f 1 X 1 +f 2 X 2 + f 3 X 3+ f 4 X 4 + f 5 X 5

= 1.94
With the hypothetical mean ranges of the weight from 1 to 5, we now can
calculate the interval of the ranges as follows:
As can be gleaned above, the intervals,(i) between 4.20 &3.40, between 3.40
&2.60, between 2.60 & 1.80, between 1.80 &1.00 are all having the same differential
value of 0.80, respectively. Similarly, such patterns are likewise observed along the
other column. Somehow, the above exhibit of both range and verbal description shall
lead to the perceptive result from a computed weighted mean of the data set from a
sample group or a particular survey item.
Since the computed value of x = 1.94 fell within the range of 1.80 – 2.59, thus,
one can claim that the respondents to this survey item have expressly disagreed to the
plan of a businessman to put up or open an internet café 100 meters away from the
school.
Activity Proper:
Calculate the weighted mean of the data set using the manual
computation and excel formulas.
Outputs for manual scheme can be submitted by using manual
computation by pasting it below. However, considering the bulk of data
we recommend using excel formulas. However, there are many ways to
kill the cat. Use the method you see is the most effective for you.
Provide analyses and interpretations of the scientific results generate
graphs and analysis of the results.

Since the computed value of x = 3.38 fell within the range of 2.60 – 3.39, thus,
one can claim that the respondents to this survey item have expressly
UNDECIDED.
