4. None of these.
Ans:
4. None of these.
Q21. The equator is also said to be the 0∘ latitude.
Ans:
The Equator is called the 0∘ latitude as other lines of latitude are measured from the equator at 1∘ in both north and south directions
and parallel to each other.
Q22. Tropic of Cancer does not pass through:
1. Manipur
2. Mizoram
3. Rajasthan
4. Tripura
Ans:
1. Manipur
Explanation:
The tropic of cancer passes through the middle of our country dividing it into two latitudinal halves being about 15 degrees from
either end. But the northern portion is very broad and the area to the north of Tropic of Cancer is nearly twice the area lies south of
it. In India, it passes through 8 states, namely, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Tripura,
and Mizoram.
Q23. If the time is 12 noon in Greenwich, then what is the time at 20° west?

Representation, on a plane surface, of features of part of the earth’s surface drawn to some specific scale.
Q27. The distance between the longitudes decreases towards___________.
Ans:
The distance between the longitudes decreases towards the Poles.
Q28. What is the value of Prime meridian?
Ans:
0° longitude.
Q29. Which lines on a globe form a grid system?
Ans:
Latitudes and Longitudes.
Q30. If in India time is 5.30 P.M. then why it is 12.00 noon in London?
Ans:
This is because India is located at 82.5 degree lies east of London which is at 0 degree longitude .Sun moves at 15 degree per hour
or one time zone per hour speed from east to west. so it takes 5.30 hours by sun to reach London from India. That is why there is a
difference of 5.30 hours.
Q31. Why does the torrid zone receive maximum amount of heat?
Ans:
The area between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn is known as the Torrid Zone. The mid-day Sun is exactly
overhead at least once a year on all the latitudes in this area; hence, this area receives maximum amount of heat.
Q32. If a person goes from west longitudes to east longitude he need to
1. Increase time in his watch.
2. Decrease time in his watch.
Ans:
2. Decrease time in his watch.
Q33. What are Latitudes & longitudes?
Ans:
1. Parallels of latitudes: All parallel circles from the equator up to the poles are called parallels of latitudes.
2. Longitudes: It is the area of the equator between the meridian of a place & a standard meridian.
Q34. Give at least two features that the Frigid Zone is known for.
Ans:
Two features of the Frigid Zone: Frigid Zone lies between the Arctic and Antarctic circles and the poles. These are as get the
slanting rays of the Sun, so they are the coldest areas on earth.
Q35. How latitude and longitude is expressed?
Ans:
Latitudes and longitudes are expressed in degrees. However, the increments of less than one degree can be expressed as a decimal or
minutes and seconds. There are 60 minutes in a degree and 60 seconds in a minute. Longitudes can be written with an E or W for
east or west. Latitudes have N or S for north or south.
Q36. In the given diagram marks the important parallels of Latitudes:
1. Equator.
2. Tropic of cancer.
3. Tropic of Capricorn.
4. Arctic Circle.
5. Antarctic Circle.

Ans:

Q37. Why is it necessary to have standard time?

Ans:
Standard time is necessary because:
The different meridian’s having different time is likely to create problems for trains & flights.
To maintain uniformity in the throughout the country.
The local time over 82o 30’ is considered standard time.

Q38. What are meridians of longitude?

Ans:
1. Lines which run vertically in north-south direction and tend to intersect each other at poles are called Meridians of Longitude.
2. They meet each other at the poles and are equal in size.
3. One thing worth remembering is that, these lines are only drawn on the maps of the world or the globe only for the convenience
of locating places and the features of the earth.
Q39. Give at least five main characteristics of the lines of latitude.
Ans:
Five main characteristics of latitudes: All lines of latitude are parallel to each other and therefore, they do not meet one- another
at any point. Lines of latitude are hoops or circles which keep decreasing in size towards the poles. The North and South Poles are
only points and not circles. The equator is the longest line of latitude. Latitudes are drawn at intervals of 1∘. The distance between
two consecutive latitudes is about 111 kilometres. There are 181 lines of latitudes. 90 each to the north and south of the equator and
the equator itself.
Q40. Draw a diagram of a grid?
Ans:

Q41. Which longitude is taken as International Date Line and why?

Ans:
The International Date Line (IDL) is an imaginary line on the surface of the Earth opposite the Prime Meridian, where the date
changes as one travels across east or west. Roughly along 180° longitude, it almost corresponds to the time zone boundary
separating -12 and +12 hours Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). Crossing the IDL, travelling east results in a day or 24 hours being
added and crossing west results in a day being subtracted. The exact number of hours depends on the time zones.
Q42. Why is latitude and longitude useful?
Ans:
Latitude and longitude allow you to use two coordinates to define any point on earth. Latitude and longitude have been useful to
navigators, geographers, cartographers and surveyors for a long time. Latitude and longitude are useful on a daily basis for a great
number of people for global positioning system, GPS and computerised mapping. Using latitude and longitude, it is possible to
calculate all sorts of things such as calculate the distances from city to city, calculate the distance from any point on earth to any
other point. For example, we can calculate the distance from your house to school.
Q43. Which meridian is taken as a standard meridian for India and why?
Ans:
In India, 82° 30' E is taken as a standard meridian because for every 1° longitude time difference is 4 minutes. India’s total
longitudinal extent is 30° (97°E-67°E=30°E). So, total time difference is 30*4=120 minutes or 2 hours, that means the time
difference between Gujarat and Arunachal Pradesh would be 2 hrs. To avoid such confusion and to have same time all over the
country, we have taken a standard meridian.
Q44. Define local time.
Ans:
Local Time:
1. Local time is calculated by the position of the Sun at noon of a given place.
2. It bases on the local meridian passing through that place.
3. When the Sun is exactly overhead at that meridian, it is 12 noon.
4. The places lying North and South on the same meridian will have the same local time. On the otherhand the places lying East or
West of that meridian have different local times.
Q45. Why do we need standard time?
Ans:
1. The local time of places which are on different meridian are bound to differ and bound to create confusion and inconvenience.
2. For example, it will be difficult to prepare a time table for trains which cross several longitude.
3. In India for instance there will be difference of about 1 hour and 45 minutes in the local time of Dwarka in Gujarat and Dibrugarh
in Assam.
4. Therefore, it is necessary to adopt local time of some central meridian of a country as the standard time for the country.
Q46. Unlike parallels of latitude, all meridians are of equal length. Thus, it was difficult to number the meridians. Hence, all countries
decided that the count should begin from the meridian which passed through Greenwich, where the British Royal Observatory is
located. This meridian is called the Prime Meridian. Its value is 0° longitude and from it we count 180° eastward as well as 180°
westward. The Prime Meridian and 180° meridian divide the earth into two equal halves, the Eastern Hemisphere and the
Western Hemisphere. Therefore, the longitude of a place is followed by the letter E for the east and W for the west. It is,
however, interesting to note that 180° East and 180° West meridians are on the same line.

Q48. How do we distribute the geographic features over the earth?

Ans:
1. To understand the distribution of geographic features and locations over the earth’s surface, we require some system of accurate
location.
2. The features can be represented on the map and a globe with the help of the points of references.
3. The two basic points of references are North Pole and South Pole which form the basis for the grid system.
4. The two sets of lines which intersect each other at the right angle on the face of the earth forms the grid.
5. These two sets of lines are known as Parallels of Latitude and Meridians of Longitude which criss-cross in such a way that they
make a network at the face of the earth.
