The Crochet Tropical Bookmark Set is the project that will cheer up any book! Super
easy to make and absolute fun, it is the perfect quick project for the back to school
season!

Inspiration
Oh the summer… When I think of summer, I think of sun, warm weather, vacations and
books! I get ahead in my reading list during this time of year, and I usually have one book
with me (aside from yarn, of course ). And with books (since I’m yet to jump on the
eReader train) come bookmarks.

I have a couple of bookmarks, but they are those generic, boring ones that come inside a
book when you buy them. Not “summer-y” at all! It was definitely time for an upgrade!
I decided to make my own crochet bookmarks!

The Project
This is a super easy project, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be fun and cute! Rummaging
through my stash, I wanted to use whatever scraps I had lying around. I found some
Drops Safran and Katia Tencel-Cotton. I use Drops Safran for the Octopus for a Preemie
project, but the Katia Yarn is a recent acquisition. It contains Lyocell, which is a
biodegradable fiber, created in an ecologically sustainable manner according to Katia
Yarns. These days I’m getting more and more conscious about what I use and whether it
is an ecologically sustainable material, so hopefully I’m doing good by using this yarn.

Checking the colors, I had yellow, red and green. I also had a bit of white and a bit of
black. I don’t know if it’s because I live in a tropical country, but I immediately saw a juicy
watermelon coming from that red and a sweet pineapple coming from the yellow!

In an attempt of keeping it simple, I tried to get the fruits in a rectangle, instead of trying
to make their respective shapes. So let’s make minimal designs, but work on those
details! I mean, a watermelon needs its seeds and a pineapple its rough skin and crazy
leaves! I am not the best crafter with a tapestry needle, but somehow, I survived drawing
those leaves so I’m sure that yours will turn out a lot nicer!

4/10
So with just a few scraps of yarn and a couple of colors you can make these awesome
tropical bookmarks! They will always be ripe and never go bad. Even after summer is
gone and you find yourself getting ready to go back to work or school, you can have
these around to brighten up your books, your days and remind you that we’ll always
have summer!

For the pineapple leaves, there is a schematic below, but feel free to deviate and
design your own leaves if you want.

Pineapple
