MEC3205 CONTROL SYSTEMS ENGINEERING
Project Assignment - Due Date: 22nd April 2024
Objective: The objective of this project is to introduce the student to MATLAB or freewares like Octave or
Scilab from INRIA "http://scilabsoft.inria.fr/download/stable/scilab-3.0.exe" for simulation, analysis and design
of control systems. You can use any of the above softwares.
Problem: A basic process/plant to be investigated is
F ( s 2  Es  16)
G s  
As 3  Bs 2  Cs  D
A is the month of your birth divided by ten /10
B is the length of your small finger in centimeters
C is one tenth of your weight in kilos
D is the length of your index finger in centimeters
E is the day of the month you were born divided by 2 (e.g 19th July, 1996 => E = 19th/2 = 9.5) and
F is the year of your birth + 10. (e.g 19th July, 1996 => F = 96+10 = 106)

The procedure is as follows:

Step1: Obtain access to MATLAB or OCTAVE or the software Scilab from the CEDAT LAN.
Study the demos and the extracts provided.

Step 2: Carry out the following system analysis and simulation activities using the software
chosen:

i. Obtain the state space representation of the system

ii. Simulate the step response of the system without a controller, and comment on
your findings
iii. Simulate the impulse response of the system without a controller, and comment
on your findings
iv. For both cases determine the poles and zeros of the system

Step 3: Assuming a feedback gain of 0.1, carry out the following system controller-design-based
activities using the software chosen:

i. Plot the root locus diagram of the system

ii. Make a bode plot and Nyquist diagram of the basic system
iii. Make a bode plot, Nyquist diagram and simulation of the system with
proportional control (make at least two values of the gain (one low and the other
high)
iv. Make a bode plot, Nyquist diagram and simulation of the step response of the
system with PD control
v. Make a bode plot, Nyquist diagram and simulation of the step response of the
system with PID control
PROBLEM 2: Plot the root locus of the system below with the following open loop transfer
K ( s 2  4s  5)
s( s  8)( s  10)( s 2  12s  45)

Submission: There will be 5 min individual beginning on Wednesday 24th April 2024.
Come with a hardcopy of your results.
