The fresh water curve is steeper

The rate of heat loss for the fresh water solution was 2.2 degrees Celsius per minute whereas the heat
loss of the salt water was 1 degree Celsius per minute. Meaning that the fresh water solution had the
greater drop in temperature with time.

The ice will melt faster in fresh water than in salt water without stirring

By identifying that the fresh water curve is steeper, it can be stated that the fresh water lost heat
quicker than the salt water solution. This means that the fresh water solution had the greater drop in
temperature with time.

The solution that has the greater drop in temperature with time would signify that the ice melted faster
in that solution. Hence the ice melted faster in fresh water since it lost heat quicker and its temperature
dropped quicker than the salt solution.

The fresh water and the ice added to it is a pure substance and all pure substances have a fixed melting
point. This fixed melting point of the ice is represented by the perpendicular line of constant
temperature on the cooling curve. At this constant temperature, the ice melts at a fixed point. However,
the salt water solution is an impure substance and since the ice added to it mixes with the salt, the ice is
also impure. All impure substances do not have a fixed melting point, it melts over a range of
temperatures and therefore in the cooling curve of salt water, the temperature was never constant.
