FACT or BLUFF
Directions: Read each of the statements carefully then check (✔) the appropriate box that
signifies your answer as to Fact if it is correct or Bluff if it is wrong.
Statements Fact Bluff

dressmakers in assembling garments.

2. After cutting the fabric, the next step you should do is to prepare the parts of
the garments.

3. Pressing each seam after you sew it will not make the seam lie flat and polish.

4. All types of fabrics can be ironed or pressed with the same temperature.

5. Unit method is done by preparing the garments part by part.

LOOKING BACK
Happy Ending.
Directions: Fill in the blank with the correct words to complete the story below. Rewrite the

__________.
She also thought of putting a cover on Claire’s pocket like __________ because

Whether you are new in this course or want to learn the basic skills in sewing, the unit
method of construction will make your sewing more systematic and organized. Always
remember that it is a lot easier to assemble a garment if the cut parts are well prepared.
Unit method of construction is a system of sewing a garment part by part or unit by
unit. A unit is a separate part of a garment. When the cloth is cut, each portion becomes a
unit. For example, the collar is one unit, so are the following: front bodice, back bodice,
sleeves, and others.
It is also essential to press or iron the parts of the garments specially the seam after
stitching, so that it would be easier to sew. Apart from it, it makes the fabric look polished.

BRIEF INTRODUCTION
What is the difference between ironing and pressing?
Ironing is putting the iron on the fabric and then pushing it to new areas like gliding
motion (see Figure a), while pressing is placing the iron down on the fabric and not moving
around. When you want it in a new area, you lift it up (see Figure b) and place it in the new
spot (see Figure c).

Activity 2: Read – Categorize - Write
Directions:
⮚ Read the procedure in assembling and pressing the garment parts.
⮚ Categorize the procedure in Table B if it is a unit method or pressing technique.
⮚ Write your answer in your activity notebook.
Assembling and Pressing Garment Parts of Children's Wear
1. Set the iron temperature according to the characteristic of the fabric.
2. Sew or finish the raw edges (edge stitches) of side seams and shoulder seam. If there is
an edging machine available, you can do the edging seam. If not available, use any kind
of seam finish.
3. If the wrinkle on the fabric is so stubborn and your fabric can also get wet, use water in a
spray bottle, spritz the area and apply the iron.
4. If the dress has a dart, sew it first and then place and pin together the shoulder slopes
(right side together) of the front and back bodice. Sew the shoulder seam.
5. After you sew the seam allowance, it is recommended to give the seam area a quick
press. But before pressing the seam into open or to one side, press the seam first as it
was sewn without opening the fabric pieces. It will help meld or blend the stitches into
the fabric.
6. Pin and sew the side seams of the front and back bodice together on the wrong side of
the fabric.
7. If you pressed the seam on the wrong way, press it again to return to its original form
before you pressed it. Allow the fabric to cool and then press the seam again in the proper
or correct directions.
8. Press the seam to open and then choose the appropriate seam finishes.
9. For delicate fabric, press on the wrong side of the fabric. If you need to press on the right
side, use a press cloth at the top of the fabric. A press cloth protects the fabric from the
direct heat of the iron.
10. After pressing, set aside the fabric, and let it cool. This prevents distortion of bias edges.

think so? _______________________________________________________________

⮚ How would you apply the things that you have learned in this lesson?

REMEMBER
Advantages of Unit Methods of Construction
1. Each part of a garment is sewn completely and set aside to be easily attached to other
parts.
2. Every piece that you sew should be handled lightly so that the fabric will not have creases.
3. The time of assembly will become shorter.
4. A systematic process leads to a productive and stress-free work environment.
Advantages of Pressing when Sewing Garments
1. Pressing has a less chance of warping your seams or fabric because of not pushing it or
stretching the fabric fibers.
2. When you are doing your sewing project, ironing is vital because it will keep your fabric nice
and smooth before you do your sewing. The said process will also help your fabric blend
with its stitches.
3. Ironing can manipulate your fabric as it can change the shape of the fabric.
But remember that ‘too much ironing can stretch out your fabric”.
4. Ironing or pressing the fabric before starting to sew can make your work easier and faster.
Example of this is sewing your dart. It can only be done properly if you press it before you
stitch it.
