What I Need to Know
Selecting the appropriate measuring instruments in carpentry is the basic
knowledge that every carpentry student should learn. “ Measure twice; cut once”
to avoid unnecessary cutting of lumber. Being familiar with the different measuring instruments
will help you mark out and measure components accurately to fit them together when
assembled.
Knowing the function of each measuring instrument will help you understand the concept
on how carpenters use these instruments on a specific task. This will help you to minimize error
on measurement.

What I Know
Directions: Read each of the following questions carefully, and write the letter of the
correct answer on your answer sheets.

1. What is used to measure long distances available from 3.00m to 7.5 meters long?
A. Extension rule C. Push-pull rule
B. Measuring tape D. Zigzag rule

2. What kind of rule is available from (4ft) 1.20m to (6ft) 1.80m commonly used by
carpenters for rough layout?
A. Caliper C. Push-pull rule
B. Measuring tape D. Zigzag rule

3. Which of the following kinds of rule is used for measuring inside distances such as
rooms, windows and cabinets?
A. Extension rule C. Push-pull rule
B. Measuring tape D. Zigzag rule

4. What is used for measuring outside diameter of cylindrical objects?

A. Caliper C. Push-pull rule
B. Measuring tape D. Zigzag rule

5. What measuring tool is used to measure longer distances?

4 Selecting Measuring Instruments

What’s In

Before we proceed to our lesson, answer each of the following questions on your
TLE notebook.

1. What classification of tools is considered condemned?

2. What do you call to the process of putting a tag on defective tool to avoid using it?
3. What is the process of checking the list of tools and equipment in the shop?
4. What are the three processes involved in sharpening edge-cutting tools?
5. What are the three processes involved in sharpening tooth-cutting tools?

What is It
Kinds of Measuring Instruments

A carpenter must know how to select appropriate measuring tools for the job to
accurately measure materials and angles and layout structures. U.S customary
measuring tools used in carpentry are divided into inches and halves, quarters, eights
and sixteenths of an inch. However, on metric tools, the divisions generally are
centimeters and millimeters.

measuring inside distances such
as room, windows, cabinets, etc.
