City of Balikpapan of East Kalimantan

In 2019, the city of Balikpapan won the achievement of being the cleanest
city in Indonesia as well as the cleanest city second in ASEAN. The government
and the community support each other to keep the city clean. Their work payed off
by the successful environmental program like road cleaning, market cleanliness
and the chief leader’s support on encouraging environmental cleanliness.
Balikpapan has a lot of ways on maximizing their efficiency on managing
wastes, they regularly evaluate their condition after managing the wastes until the
final waste disposal site, even up to the point to encourage the possibility of using
sanitary landfill without unnecessarily throwing wastes carelessly. They also
worked with the national electric company which in Indonesia called PLN on
managing even more wastes like wood to be reusable or innovation on handling
methane gas for maximizing the utility of wastes. They also had a vision in mind,
every year to reduce wastes by a few amount of percent. They do it slowly, but
surely guarantees that it will reduced and it pays off by the fact they reduced on
26% which is a close call with national target of 30% in 2030. With that vision in
mind, they can coordinate and cooperate relatively easy since they had their mind
fixed in one direction which increases the efficiency and the potential of
cleanliness upon that city.
Its obvious and reasonable that they got the right to win the award of being
the cleanliness city in Indonesia in 2019. The city is nothing without the presence
of mutual awareness upon the villagers living in the city with a great care and
responsibilities. The chief after hearing the award give a huge gratitude to the
inhabitant for their teamwork, responsibilities and great respect in their
participation for the cleanliness of the city.
