Gender and Society

Name: Jhon Mark Permejo

Course/Year: BAELS 1B

ASSESSMENT

Direction: Making use of the different socialization and gender concepts, answer each
question in 3 to 5 statements/sentences only.

1. Reflect on how your family members discussed gender roles. What are some specific
phrases or ideas that were commonly expressed about gender in your household?

-When I was still a child, I always noticed that They called me “Totoy” and my sister
as “Neneng” when it comes to playing. To me I often hear aggressive sounds like
“Grrr” or “Rawr” and the toys my mom always buys for me are robots and
dinosaurs. However when it comes to my sister, It is always with a soft voice and her
toys are always playing with flowers or teapots or some fancy things.

2. Recall a particular incident/s where a family member reinforced or challenged

traditional gender roles? Describe the incident and its impact on your views.

It was past 6:00 pm that time and my mom asked me to buy dinner for the night. On
my way to the store. I saw my sister not far away from our house. i told her that mom
is ordering her to buy dinner. So I went back to the house and told mom that I passed it
on to my sister. My mom was very furious. She says “ You're the one I asked to buy
because you are a guy, don't you know it is dangerous for your sister to be outside at
this time of hour” I was confused because I know our barangay is a safe place and
there aren't much people there that would do such a thing. From that moment on, It
was ingrained in my mind that a girl is always attracted to trouble, especially to guys
and a girl is weak and incapable of defending herself..

3. How did the gender dynamics within your family (e.g., division of labor,
decision-making) influence your understanding of gender roles?

Growing up in our household as a boy meant I didn't have to do chores like washing
dishes, doing laundry, or cleaning the house. My mom always said those tasks were for
my older sister to handle. so growing up it is in my mind that those things should be
done by a girl. Maybe that's why we have a saying now that when a husband is the one
doing the chores, he is under the saya ni misis

4. What are family traditions or cultural practices related to gender that affected your
views about gender? Explain how these traditions or practices influenced your
perception of gender.

-My mom always told me that it should always be the man who makes the first move
or confess if he wants to get the girl. Because of these. Until now it is still in my mind
that it is very unladylike for a girl to show her affection first.

5. If you could change one aspect of how your family taught or exhibited gender roles,
what would it be and why?

-If there's one thing I could change about my family's views on gender roles, it would
definitely be this. Not all men have to be macho or the ones in charge, or always the
ones bringing home the bacon. It's perfectly fine for a man to show his emotions and
be vulnerable at times too. Gender roles are outdated and limiting, and it's
important for everyone to be able to express themselves authentically without fear of
judgment or ridicule. Men should be able to embrace their sensitive side and not feel
pressured to conform to traditional stereotypes of masculinity. By challenging these
rigid expectations, we can create a more inclusive and accepting environment for all
individuals to thrive and be their true selves.

6. How would you evaluate your views now about gender and gender role?

-Nowadays, there are numerous genders in our generation. Gender roles are becoming less
relevant, as women can do anything men can do. and vice versa. The traditional binary
understanding of gender, which categorized individuals strictly as either male or female, is
being challenged and expanded upon. People are increasingly recognizing that gender is not
solely determined by biological sex, but rather exists on a spectrum. In today's society,
individuals have the freedom to express their gender identity in ways that align with their
true selves. This includes identifying as non-binary, genderqueer, genderfluid, or any other
gender identity that goes beyond the traditional male or female categories. This recognition
and acceptance of diverse gender identities has led to a more inclusive and understanding
society.

Our generation is witnessing a significant shift in the understanding and acceptance of

gender. The recognition of diverse gender identities and the breaking down of traditional
gender roles have led to a more inclusive and equal society. Women are proving their
capabilities in all areas of life, and individuals are embracing their true selves, regardless of
societal expectations. However, there is still work to be done to achieve full gender equality
and create a world where everyone can thrive,
