What is Crystalize
Intelligence?

• Crystallized Intelligence refers to the ability to

utilize skills and knowledge acquired via prior
learning (Horn, 1969). The use of crystallized
intelligence involves the recalling of pre-existing
information as well as skills.
• Crystallized Intelligence rises
gradually and remains stable
throughout adulthood until it begins
to decline after age 60 (Cavanaugh
& Blanchard-Fields, 2006).
• Examples of the use of
crystallized intelligence include
vocabulary exams, remembering
history, and recalling formulas
what IS FLUID
Intelligence?

• Fluid intelligence is the capacity to think

speedily and reason flexibly to solve new
problems without relying on past
experience and accumulated knowledge.
• ability to reason • refers to current ability

• capability to learn new things • decreases with age

• abstract thinking and • Is powered by the working

problem solving memory
One way to understand fluid intelligence is by imagining
yourself in a situation where you have to solve a complex
puzzle that you've never seen before. With fluid intelligence,
you would be able to analyze the puzzle, identify patterns or
rules, and devise a strategy to solve it, even if you haven't
encountered a similar puzzle in the past.

Understanding fluid intelligence can be fascinating because it

shows us how our brains can adapt and learn new things,
even when faced with unfamiliar challenges.
