TOPIC: ICT POLICIES AND SAFETY ISSUES IN TEACHING AND LEARNING

OBJECTIVE 2: Recognize safety issues associated with the use of ICT in educational settings.
Technology has a lot of benefits as it makes our life easier, yet if not properly used it can cause
danger not just to the user but also to its surroundings. It is also not risky by itself but it can be
vulnerable to risk depends on how it is used. In order to avoid the misuse of technologies which can
causes danger to the people especially the students, safety issues were identified to understand the
proper usage of technology as it ensures safety of the users especially those who were engaged in
educational settings.
Physical issues are the first safety issues. It is the most noticeable issues to the users as it deals
with the physical bodies. It includes the straining of the hands or wrists, slouching, and the most
common affect to human body is ruining of the eyesight. Since people tend to focus in the screen
for the long time, then radiation emitted from a device can lead to negative things.
The next one is the risk in the use of ICT and e-NETWORKING is one of the safety issues in
information and communication technology usage. Technology is very rampant nowadays that it
seems to be uncontrollable. Despite of having many benefits, negative effects and influence on
students or learners cannot be ignored. There are lots of risk when technology is explored, this
includes the risk of exposure to inappropriate context, cyberbullying, privacy issues, addiction to
gaming, social pressure, and many more.
Misuse of ICT is the 3rd issue. We all know that if you don`t know how to use something then you
might ruin it or worse you will be the one who`ll be ruined. It is very common at school or even
outside the school that don’t know how to control themselves to use technologies especially when
curiosity hits. In school, some of the minor misuse made by learners are copying assignment that
leads to plagiarism, downloading useless materials (materials not relevant to their studies) and
more.
Another safety issue of ICT in educational settings is the e-SAFETY. This issue confronts the
negative issue of ICT. It takes care not just internet technologies but also the electronic devices
such as phones or any other wireless technology. The a-SAFETY highlights the needs to educate
the children or young learners about the benefits, risk, and responsibilities in using information
technology. Some examples of issues of e-SAFETY includes supporting the young learner and
adults to develop safer online behaviors in or out the school, e-SAFETY safeguards the children
and young people in digital world, and emphasizing learning to understand new technologies in
positive ways.
In addition, there is also a safety issue of ICT that is called the network management. This issue
deals with how to properly manage the network usage inside the classroom. It has 4 parts which
includes, the safety in the use of network in school that deals with the guidance to students on how
to properly use networks at school, password policy that talks about the privacy, personal mobile

phones and devices that focuses on proper usage of devices and the limit of time to use, and
cameras that is all about where and when camera should be used.
Technology offers lots of advantages in human life that people basically forget to put effort
on their daily activities. We noticed that technology helps our life easier but we can`t ignore the fact
that people tend to rely too much to technology that they often forget to exert effort on their own
work, especially students. That`s why recognizing safety issues is a must in order for us to identify
what we need to do to understand more about technology that can surely help us avoid misuse and
lessen the risk of negative results.
