Theological Change
At the start of our period, most English Presbyterians could be
located on a theological spectrum ranging from the orthodox
Calvinism of the Westminster confession of faith (1646) to the
teachings of Richard Baxter. Baxter and his admirers accepted
that a Christian’s salvation depended on divine assistance, but
they did not believe that God had predestined some for
damnation, or that the salvation of all was impossible. In this
way, the Baxterians modified the Westminster confession’s
doctrines of predestination and the atonement, without giving
human free will the role in salvation envisaged by Arminians.
Baxter’s theology was thus intended as a peaceable, catholic
‘middle way’ between Calvinism and Arminianism. Writing in
1714, John Rastrick, a proponent of the middle way, argued
that both the Calvinist emphasis on free grace and the
Arminian assertion of free will were true, mutually compatible,
and taught by the Westminster Assembly’s catechisms.40
For all their pacific intent, Baxterians did not fight shy of
controversy. Baxter and his ally Daniel Williams entered a
heated exchange with extreme Calvinists after the sermons of
the antinomian Tobias Crisp were republished in 1690.
Williams’s major contribution to the debate, Gospel-Truth
Stated (1692), undermined the Happy Union, not only because
some Independents (p.20) espoused the doctrines of Crisp
that Williams attacked, but also because the book’s
imprimatur was signed, in the second edition, by forty-nine
Presbyterian ministers. It seemed an antagonistic and partisan
statement. In the work, Williams reacted against Crisp’s
teaching that the covenant of grace was entirely
unconditional, requiring no performance on the part of
believers. Williams asserted that the Westminster Assembly
saw the covenant as conditional, though he underlined the
point that the conditions—faith and repentance—are
‘performed by Grace, and not by Natural Power’.41 According
to Williams, Crisp was wrong to believe that the benefits of
justification are possessed by a member of the elect before her
effectual calling, and even before her birth. Williams therefore
rejected the antinomian conclusion that ‘the worst Sinners, if
elect, have as much interest in Christ, as the greatest Saint’.
After effectual calling, the elect would persevere on the path
to salvation, but these justified Christians were nonetheless to
be counted guilty of whatever sins they committed.42 The
controversy provoked by Gospel-Truth Stated alienated

and worship that are due to him alone’.71 It was not a doctrine
that could survive the process of intellectual and moral
improvement characteristic of Priestley’s sort of Dissenters.
Among Unitarians of a later generation, Robert Aspland
experienced a particularly rapid intellectual journey from
orthodoxy, through Arianism to Unitarianism. In 1805, Aspland
preached that the ‘notion of Jesus being God Almighty is
utterly irreconcileable [sic] with the whole tenor of the Bible’.
He called the Arian belief in Christ’s ‘pre-existence’ as a spirit
before his birth to Mary ‘harmless’, but Aspland nevertheless
considered this idea an ill-founded ‘error’.72 Other leading
figures, notably Thomas Belsham, were more combative in
their rejection of Arianism.

TO
The chief merit the Translator claims for this little effort is
“faithfulness of translation.” He has endeavoured to translate every
word and every thought of the Russian writer, and to avoid additions.
Most of the poems selected for translation are popular, not only
amongst the higher classes of Russian society, but also with the
Russian soldiery and peasantry, who are very fond of poetry, and
amongst whom education has spread, and continues to spread, with
marvellous rapidity.
The Translator trusts that this little volume may not only prove
interesting to ordinary English readers wishing to get a general idea
of Russian poetry, but may also be found of some service to
Englishmen studying Russian, and Russians studying English.
