Filming dolphins
Tim Jones is a film-maker who has made lots of animal films for children.
Dolphins are his favourite animal and he has travelled around the world
filming them. He enjoys filming dolphins because they’re not afraid of the
cameras, so he can get very near to them.

Dolphins are difficult to find. Film-makers sometimes spend several days in

the water looking for them, but Tim was lucky with his latest film. He saw
some dolphins on the first day of filming. He then had to dive into the water.
The water was very cold, but his biggest problem was that he couldn’t swim
as fast as the dolphins.

During filming, Tim noticed how friendly the dolphins were and how
interested they were in the camera, but he expected this. What he couldn’t
believe was that when he swam to the right the dolphins did too. It was
almost as if they thought he was another dolphin.

In the film, the dolphins seem to be playing games together, which is

amazing. But Tim explains that what really shows how intelligent they are, is
how they talk to each other by making noises. He says the dolphins use
these noises to tell each other where to find food.

For his next project, Tim plans to film elephants in Africa. Sarah Francis,
another film-maker, has agreed to work with him on the film. But before he
does that, he’s going to spend time with his family because he hasn’t seen
them much recently.

Rosie’s dinosaur tooth

Rosie Macintyre is 11. She lives in Scotland, and she loves dinosaurs. A few
years ago, her science teacher showed the class some pictures and explained
that these animals lived on Earth millions of years ago. Rosie thought they
were really cool, so now she spends lots of time reading books and watching
TV programmes about them and drawing dinosaur pictures.

One day, Rosie and her friends were on the beach near her home when she
saw something fantastic – a dinosaur tooth! She immediately got out her
mobile phone. She wanted to call her mum and dad. But before she did that,
she looked at a photograph of a dinosaur tooth on a science website, to
check that it looked the same. It did!

Rosie and her parents then took the tooth to scientist Dr Kevin Chen, a
dinosaur expert at a museum. Dr Chen told Rosie how old it was, and
explained how marks on it showed what kind of food the dinosaur ate. He
thinks the tooth is amazing because it’s one of the largest ones he has ever
seen.

The tooth is in the museum now. Dr Chen thought Rosie might be unhappy
about this, but she doesn’t mind. She says she was afraid of losing it at
home. The museum is popular with visitors, and the tooth is near the
entrance where everyone can see it. Rosie thinks this is great and hopes to
find another piece of a dinosaur one day.

A very old ship

by William James, age 12

Last Friday, I visited an old warship called

the Mary Rose with my class. The ship
sank to the bottom of the sea in 1545 and
stayed there for hundreds of years. When it
was found in 1982, it was put in a museum.
I’d wanted to see the Mary Rose for a long
time, so for me it was an exciting trip.

Before the trip, our teacher showed us a

video about the Mary Rose. I thought it was a fantastic story, and I read a
book my dad gave me about its history as well. Then, when we went on the
trip, we listened to audio guides, so I learnt even more about the ship.

I learnt how normal people lived in those times, for example, what they ate
and wore. I thought these things were interesting, but what I enjoyed
learning about most was the kind of games people played and what
musical instruments they had.

Quite often when ships are under the sea for hundreds of years, there’s
nothing left to see. But many things were found on the Mary Rose,
including wooden bowls and leather objects. The ship is small, but during a
war 700 men lived on board. It was amazing: I couldn’t believe there was
enough space for so many people.

After the trip, we put our drawings and stories about the Mary Rose on the
classroom wall. Some students didn’t enjoy the trip, but I thought it was
great. I’m planning to find out more about the 1500s, especially about how
ships were built.

One boat, one dream

Young sailor Laura Dekker talks about her love of the sport

My mother is from Germany and my father is from the Netherlands, but I was actually born
in New Zealand. They were on a sailing trip at the time. When the trip ended, they decided
to return to my dad’s home country. That’s where we lived when I was a child.

Every day after school, instead of playing with other kids, I preferred to spend time sailing
with Dad. He taught me everything I know about boats. I was only six when I went out on a
boat alone for the first time.

On my eighth birthday, Dad gave me a book by an American woman called Tania Aebi.
She sailed around the world alone when she was 18. I thought her story was really
interesting and I told Dad that I wanted to do the same.

When I was 14, I knew that I was ready for my own trip. My father was happy for me to go.
The TV and newspapers were interested because I was the youngest person to do this, but
that wasn’t important for me. I just wanted to sail my boat and do something new and
exciting.

My round-the-world trip took me 17 months. I enjoyed arriving in different countries and

meeting people there. But what I loved most was feeling close to the sea and sky, and
seeing some amazing animals. It was a fantastic journey.

The gold ring

Sixteen-year-old Monika Levin lives on a farm in the north of Sweden with
her family. One day, about ten years ago, Monika was in the kitchen with
her mother, Ulrike, and they decided to make a cake together. At the time,
Ulrike was wearing the gold ring which her husband gave her when they
got married.

Monika remembers that her mother wanted to keep the ring clean, so she
took it off her finger and put it on the kitchen table. But after they put the
cake in the oven and tidied up the kitchen, they saw that the ring was
gone! They looked everywhere – on the floor, behind the cupboards – but
couldn’t find it.

Last weekend, the Levin family had a big surprise. Ulrike grows a lot of
fresh food in her garden, and one day, when she needed some carrots for
the family’s dinner, she went out to get some. A short time later, Monika
heard a loud shout from the garden, and she ran outside.

In the garden Monika found her mother holding a small carrot, about the
size of a finger. And, believe it or not, the carrot was growing inside her
mother’s gold ring! There is only one problem – Ulrike’s fingers are now
too fat for the ring. But she is very happy to have her ring back, and she’s
going to look after it carefully from now on and make sure it doesn’t get
mixed up with rubbish from the kitchen.

My holiday in Canada
by thirteen-year-old Ben Carter

This summer, I travelled round Canada with my parents and younger brother Daniel. Our
uncle went there last year and told us about all the different things you can do there. It
sounded amazing, so we decided to go. I already knew lots about Canada from my lessons
at school and couldn’t wait to get there.

One day, we went on a boat journey down a river in the Rocky Mountains. The water was
freezing cold and very fast moving. We had to practise holding onto the boat so we didn’t
fall out. Then away we went! It was just amazing! I didn’t want it to end, but it wasn’t safe to
go any further. Only a few metres after the place where we stopped, there was a hundred-
metre waterfall.

Another day we went to Drumheller, in the south of Canada, where scientists have found
lots of dinosaur bones. As well as going on a tour of the town’s museum, we went to watch
scientists working outside. One of them let my brother pick up some real dinosaur teeth.
Daniel thought it was the best part of the day!

Mum and Dad’s favourite bit was walking in the mountains. Daniel and I got bored because
we wanted to see some bears, but of course that didn’t happen! At the top of one very high
mountain, Mum and Dad couldn’t believe there was nothing to see for miles. From
mountains in Europe, you can always see something – a road or a village if nothing else!

A young cook

When he was younger, thirteen-year-old Dara Reilly enjoyed

watching cooking programmes on TV. But it was his
grandmother who showed him how to cook. She could make
lots of different dishes and never needed to use a cookbook.

Last year, Dara entered a five-day cooking competition for teenagers called Cook It. On the
first day, they were put into teams and given a box of food to make a three-course meal.
They were also given a laptop, so they could email people they knew for ideas. Dara sent a
message to his grandmother, who told him how to make some special dishes with the
things in the box.

There were some difficult moments for the young cooks. When they were baking cakes,
one boy put in salt instead of sugar. Another time, when they had to work in the kitchen of a
real restaurant, the members of one team couldn’t agree. And when they had to boil a
perfect egg without a clock, all the teams had problems.

Dara’s team didn’t win the competition, but he says he doesn’t mind. ‘I don’t think the
competition helped me become a better cook, but I’m still glad I entered. The Cook It
kitchen was amazing. It was so modern. But the best thing for me was making so many
new friends. That was great!’

Dara now goes to cooking classes. He’s going to start his own website soon and give other
teenagers advice on cooking great dishes. And who knows? He might even open his own
restaurant one day.

Anna Learns to Surf

Before I went to Australia, I did a beginner’s surfing course in Portugal. I travelled there
from my home in Spain and hoped to learn lots. I wanted to be a good surfer by the time I
got to Australia, where they are very advanced. But, I was no better at the end of the
course! I was part of a group of four people and we spent five hours on both days
practising on the beach, not in the water!

So, when I travelled to Australia I booked a course at Waves Surf School. The surfing
teacher’s instructions were easy to follow and, after just three days, everyone in my group
could stand on their boards and surf all the way to the beach. It was amazing! After a
hard day, I returned to a lovely apartment and looked out at the sea. I then relaxed for a
bit before going out for dinner.

The staff at the surf school were great. They told me about the best tourist places to visit
and even drove me home to my apartment when I went clothes shopping and had too
many bags to carry. While I was at the school, I learned more about Australia and its
people than I did when I visited cities like Brisbane. I had a great time and it was really
difficult to say goodbye when I had to fly home.
