ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE CARVING THE CONTOURS OF THE POLICING

MECHANISM

One thing we barely knew about a few years ago is now ruling our lives. Be it alexa or any other
artificial intelligence tool, most of us used it at some or the other point of time in our lives.
Artificial intelligence is one such thing that we can find in many areas, social media, army,
education, judiciary etc. AI can be found everywhere. The term "artificial intelligence" may also
be used to refer to any kind of computer that exhibits human-like behaviors such as learning and
problem-solving. AI has spread its feathers in the policing sector too, it is used in police sectors
for various things such as monitoring, controlling, efficiency, time saving etc.

BENEFITS OF AI IN POLICING SECTOR

 Monitoring the crowd with use of the AI through video footage. Some of them have the
feature of face recognition too.
 Face recognition helps the police in differentiating the citizens on the basis of gender etc.
 Video footages helps the police force finding anyone for whom the police is in search of
quickly. It also helps the police force in solving cases as they get information such as car
number, number of people involved, etc. from the video footage.
 Drones – drones that have the AI integrated software and sensors can also help police
identify the crime hotspots.
 Video technology in AI helps police force in post crime investigation and the video
technology also helps the force at times when large crowd is to be gathered such as
festivals where they can monitor the people in case of emergency.
 Fingerprint detection is yet another most useful and famous tool by AI that mainly helps
the police to catch the guilty.

OTHER WAYS HOW AI CAN BE USED

 There should be a centralized and easily accessible data collection app or website where
the police force can access information about the past cases and all the past criminals,
protected by AI integrated strong fingerprint or face/speech recognition pass codes so that
the bulk of physical papers and bulky documents are reduced.
 Some countries across the globe have started adopting AI robots working alongside the
police force and do tasks that are dangerous for humans alongside this it will also help in
fast solving of case.
 AI tools can also be installed at prisons that can help detect faulty movements and violent
actions either by prison guards or by the prisoners.
 AI also consists of the software called as predictive analysis, that helps the force in
predicting about where the crime will take place, prime suspects etc.

STATES THAT ADOPTED AI

 Hyderabad- the police department entered into an MOU with Synchrony Financial for
installing CCTVs across the city.
 Delhi- Delhi government in 2017 started a face recognition program and also a separate
program was created called as “Crime mapping analytics and predictive system” helping
in predictive analytics.
 Maharashtra- the Maharashtra government is trying to add predictive policy in their cyber
security program.
 Kolkata- government proposed this idea that allows the AI analytics in controlling the
city traffic by connecting all the city signals to one centralized place and interconnected
by Wi-Fi.

LEGAL FRAMEWORK

 Ministry Of Information and IT – it stated to make four committees to work on making a

proper plan for incorporating AI in various sectors.
 NITI Aayogs’s AI for all (2018) –Niti aayaog was given the task to make a national
policy framework for AI, its uses and development but all it could do it to release a
primary report that suggested how AI can be a popular tool in future and its state in India.
 The Indian government has started to increase the budget from the year 2020, for the
development for AI, machine learning.
 Center for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics was also established by the DRDO in 2014
and also created a legal framework for AI.
