CHAPTER III

METHODS AND PROCEDURES

This section presents the methods and procedures that were undertaken in the

duration of the project. This specifically explains the data collection approaches and

strategies, ethical considerations, materials and procedures and data analysis approaches.

Data Collection Approaches and Strategies

This study made use of descriptive and development-evaluative methods of

research. Descriptive-qualitative design was employed to document the issues and

challenges encountered by the students with regard to the existing method of attendance

monitoring in Padre Garcia Integrated National High School. The rsearchers conducted

semi-structured interview among 10 teachers in the school, and came up with relevant

themes that answered the posted query.

The researchers then maximized the use of online resources in order to gather

necessary and relevant data for the design and development of the RFID system. Reliable

literature and online videos were a vast aid in order to gain ideas about the appropriate

materials, software and hardware to be used. More so web information was utilized in order

to learn and master coding and programming that were the primary procedures in

developing the system.

Aside from online resources, they consulted professionals and experts in the field

of information technology (IT) to gain assistance in the process. They approached teachers

from Padre Garcia Integrated National High School and Batangas State University and a

free-lance IT specialist to obtain vital information as inputs for the project. These
individuals also served as the evaluators of the developed artifact. More importantly, pilot

implementation and test was conducted among Grade 12 HUMSS-Shakespeare students to

determine the usability and functionality of the system.

Ethical Considerations

The development of the RFID-based attendance system at Padre Garcia Integrated

National High School involved strict adherence to ethical considerations of research. The

researchers assured the legality of the process by seeking approval from the principal of

Padre Garcia Integrated National High School regarding the collection of data. More so,

permission from the students and the adviser of Grade 12 HUMSS-Shakespeare was sought

and obtained regarding the use of their personal and school information.

They also guaranteed that the protection of students' privacy and confidentiality was

prioritized throughout the study to ensure the ethical integrity of the study. Additionally,

the school administration was notified and consulted about the p i l o t implementation of

the system in the school. To prevent any unauthorized access or misuse, the privacy and

security of the attendance data collected were strictly maintained and protected.

Materials Selection Stage. After collecting information from the web and

evaluating existing RFID systems, the researchers were able to identify the components to

be used. They chose the appropriate programming language for the coding of the programs.

Then, ordered online the hardware. They made sure that these materials were functional

but economical.

Design Stage. The researchers carefully planned the dashboard of the system. They

considered all the information that would be flashed on the screen or monitor in lay-outing

the system.

Development Stage. After the materials were gathered and the design was

finalized, the researchers started to create the code needed to run the system. As

mentioned earlier, they used Visual Studio Code 2022 and PHPMyAdmin to run the

system in order to capture the time-ins and time- outs of the students.

Testing and Evaluation Stage. The researchers first asked assistance from the IT

specialists and computer teachers to evaluate the developed RFID system. They were given

an evaluation sheet and the system was evaluated based on its usability. Next, the selected

section were exposed to the pilot testing, after which, students evaluated the output based

also on the given testing parameter.

Data Analysis Approach

After collecting the pertinent data, the researchers proceeded to its interpretation

and analysis. The following treatments were used to interpret the gathered data:

Thematic Analysis. This was used to identify the issues and challenges

encountered by teachers in the existing method of attendance monitoring system.

Mean. This was employed in order to measure the evaluation of experts and

students on the developed system.

T-test. This statistical tool was used to determine significance difference between

the evaluation of the experts and selected students.
