In this lesson, students will learn how to create and read fractions using
Overview animals. They will do various practice problems and a Kahoot to prepare
them for the Zoo.
3.NS.3 The student will use mathematical reasoning and justification to
represent and compare fractions (proper and improper) and mixed numbers with
Standards of denominators of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, and 10), including those in context.
Learning a. Represent, name, and write a given fraction (proper or improper) or
mixed number with denominators of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, and 10
b. Identify a fraction represented by a model as the sum of unit fractions
How do we create fractions? What are fractions?
Essential Questions
Students will be able to use concrete materials to model proper fractions,
Objectives improper fractions, and mixed.

I can use concrete materials to model proper fractions, improper fractions,

and mixed.
Learning Target I can use pictures to model proper fractions, improper fractions, and mixed
numbers.
I can name proper fractions with denominators of 12 or less.
Necessary Prior Must know how to read proper fractions, improper fractions, and mixed
fractions.
