A. Pre-reading: Discuss the questions below with your partner.

 Do you like ODTÜ campus?


 What do you know about it?
 What is there on campus?

B. Read the text below. It gives information about ODTÜ campus. Is there anything new to you?

ODTÜ is famous for its beautiful campus. It is in the south-west of the capital of Turkey, Ankara. It is
quite big: the campus area is 4500 hectares, and the forest area is 3043 hectares. The university has
more than 25,000 students. ODTÜ also has a lake called Lake Eymir. It is about 20 kilometers from
the centrum of Ankara. There are a large number of sports
facilities on campus. Students can play tennis, basketball,
football, or they can swim in the olympic-size indoor
swimming pool in winter and in the outdoor swimming pool
in summer. There are also facilities for studying, too. The
library and the silent study rooms in the dormitories are
usually quiet places. There is also a shopping center (Çarşı), and there are a lot of shops there. For
example, there is a stationer’s, a photographer’s and fast food restaurants.

A. THE WORD
“ODTÜ is famous for its beautiful campus.”
There are seven words in this sentence. A word is a small part of a sentence, and we use words to make
sentences. Words have different uses or functions in a sentence. In NLL Unit 1, you studied nouns and
adjectives, but we also have verbs, adverbs, pronouns and prepositions. These are called parts of speech.

PARTS OF SPEECH EXAMPLES

A NOUN names a person, a place, a thing or an idea. * Tokyo is a big city.

* Eda is from Turkey. She (=Eda)


A PRONOUN is used in the place of a noun. lives in İzmir.
* Rio is a big city. Thousands of
people visit it (=Rio) every year.
A PREPOSITION joins the noun to some other part of the sentence. * Jakarta is in the west of Indonesia.

* It is very cold in Siberia.


A VERB tells us about the state or action in the sentence.
* Many people visit Indonesia.

An ADJECTIVE describes a noun. It answers the following questions: * Venice is a small city.
What kind? Which one? How many? Whose? * The weather is hot all year.

An ADVERB describes a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. * It rains heavily.


It answers questions such as Where? When? How? Or How often? * It is usually foggy in my city.

A simple sentence is a group of words and it expresses a “complete thought.” A simple sentence generally
has at least one SUBJECT and one VERB.

 The subject performs the action of the verb, or it is described in the sentence. It can be a person or a
thing. It can be a noun (Jason, classroom, students), a noun phrase (my friends, a black dog, her
husband’s two cousins) or a subject pronoun (I, they, she).

 The verb usually expresses the action (work, sleep) of the sentence or a situation (is, have).

The Verb “TO BE”


In NLL Unit 1, you studied the verb “to be”. You can use it with these structures:

1. BE + adjective * ODTÜ is famous for its campus.


* Big cities are crowded and noisy.
* Ankara is cold in winter.

2. BE + (adjective) + noun * You are students at ODTÜ.


* New York isn’t the capital of the USA.
* Xavier is an expensive restaurant.

3. BE + prep. phrase * She is at work.


* İstanbul is in the north-west of Turkey.
* They aren’t from Antalya.

4. There + BE * There are different shops on ODTÜ campus.


* There is a stationery, a photographer’s and fast food restaurants.

Grammar Tip:

Connecting Ideas 1: “AND”

In NLL Unit 1, you studied “and” to join two nouns or two adjectives. You can also join other things.
