Importance of Academic Writing for University Students: A literature Review

This paper aims to critically review the importance of academic writing for university students. This
study investigates the issue such as why teachers, universities and policy makers are calling for
foundational role of academic writing especially for university students. The researcher argues that
academic writing facilitates knowledge construction, analytical skills, scholarly conversations, critical
thinking development, communication skill enhancement, and academic career advancement. The
research approach adopted in this study includes views, reviews, and critics put forward in different
literature. The findings suggest that academic writing plays a foundational role by playing a medium for
students to engage with disciplinary knowledge, develop analytical skills, and contribute to scholarly
academic genres. The paper concludes academic writing has been dominant area for university students
and therefore teachers, academic staffs, and policy makers should pay a critical attention to contribution
of academic writing to academia.
