Circuit Control Devices

Controlling a circuit is an essential part of the electrical system. The control devices will
turn circuits on and off and limit the conditions within the circuit, including amperage and
voltage.
Circuit control devices include:
 resistors
 switches
 relays
 solenoids

Identify and give at least three examples and application of the four circuit control
devices. (five points each control devices.)
1. Resistors
Example 1. Voltage Divider Circuit:
 Application: Used in electronics to create reference voltages and set bias
points in transistors.
Example 2. Current Limiting Resistor:
 Application: Protects LEDs by limiting the current flowing through them in
a series circuit.
Example 3. Pull-Up or Pull-Down Resistor:
 Application: Ensures a defined voltage level in digital circuits, preventing
floating inputs.

2. Switches
Example 1. Push Button Switch in Electronic Devices:
 Application: Used in consumer electronics for momentary operations, like
turning on a device.
Example 2. Rotary Switch in Selector Circuits:
 Application: Selects different input or output options in electronic
equipment, like audio or video devices.
Example 3. Microswitch in Appliance Safety Systems:
 Application: Used in appliances to cut power when a door or cover is
opened for safety reasons.

3. Relays
Example 1. Time Delay Relay in Lighting Systems:
 Application: Delays the turning on or off of lights in stairwells or security
lighting.
Example 2. Solid-State Relay in Electronic Devices:
 Application: Used for silent and fast switching in electronic circuits, like in
audio amplifiers.
Example 3. Electromagnetic Relay in Industrial Control Panels:
 Application: Switches high-power electrical circuits in industrial
automation and control systems.

4. Solenoids
Example 1. Door Lock Solenoid in Automotive Systems:
 Application: Engages and disengages door locks in vehicles.
Example 2. Valve Solenoid in Irrigation Systems:
 Application: Controls the flow of water by opening or closing valves in
irrigation systems.
Example 3. Latching Solenoid in Cash Register Drawers:
 Application: Holds the cash register drawer closed until released
electronically.
