them in different communicative speech style. You will be given activities that you can
answer on your own after reading and going through the different parts of this module.
Please remember not to make markings on this module and write your answers on your
notebook.
At the end of this module, you are expected to:

What’s New

What is love like for you as a teenager? Find out what is love like based on the
different professions.
What is Love Like?
By: Jennifer S. Gonzales

Love is exactly like saying, for better

or for worse, for richer or for poorer
in sickness and in health,
to love and cherish, till death
do us part.

Love is like an examination,

It is always a part of education.
If there’s a formative assessment;
Surely follows a summative assessment.
but all are essential learnings.

Love is like a good therapy.

It gives you an increased energy.
Love is like a medical treatment
for any kind of ailment
It is for a life time effective medication.

Love is likened to many different words of primes.

It is a favored topic of all times-
for lawyers, pilots, engineers and priests,
for teachers, doctors and dentists,
for friends and families, most of all.

What is love like for you now?

Is love like telling, mom I have a surprise?
What is love like for you ten years from now?
Will it be like a high-rise
blueprint which will provide you completeness?

Comprehension Questions:

1. What is the poem all about?

2. What do you think is the profession of the speaker in the first stanza? Why do
you say so?
3. Define love as described in the second stanza.
4. What particular profession uses words like therapy, ailment and medication?
5. In your own point of view, what is meant by the line, “Is love like telling, mom I
have a surprise.”?
6. Consider the words used in the poem like blueprint and high-rise, most likely
what will be your profession ten years from now?
7. What does the fourth stanza imply?

6
What Is It
Discussion

How do you communicate with your friends? How do you listen to professionals
so that you will be able to grasp what they are saying? There are terms or words that
are only understood by members or group of professions.
In legal profession, there are many terms considered as jargons that only lawyers
and judges frequently use. Determining the vocabularies or the jargons used by the
people you meet will help you to communicate easily and effectively. Studying these
special vocabularies and considering the speech style applicable to the situation you
are in will actually enhance your communication skills.
Look at the first stanza of the poem again. Are the lines familiar? Yes, you are
right. The expressions like, “For better or for worse,” and “Till death do us part,” are
special words or expressions used by a priest to ask the groom and bride in a frozen
speech style, a wedding ceremony.
The speaker in the second stanza makes use of the words or expressions like
examination, education, assessment and essential learnings. These words, though very
simple, will give you clues as to what the speaker’s profession is. Does this remind you
of your favorite teacher? Does this remind you of your classroom setting with a
consultative speech style?
The speaker in the third stanza makes use of medical terms like therapy, ailment
and medication. Have you heard these words from a doctor? Even in just visiting a
doctor or a dentist, eventually, you will learn jargons essential to effective
communication.

Important insights to remember:

How is jargon different from other words?

Jargon is a technical or specialized language. Professions and other fields or
disciplines have their own language. It is important to understand the meanings
of the words and their context so that we can incorporate jargons into our own
language.

Dr. Cruz: Well, there is an inflammation in some part of your gums.
I think we need to do a new set of radiographs.
Billy: Is there something wrong? It looks like you may have a few
cavities.
