Assignment 2 TEMPLATE: Introduction and Body Paragraph Drafting

PART I: Using the instruction in Lecture 2, write the introductory summary paragraph in the
box below. Remember to start the summary by naming the “Superman and Me” essay and then
identify the main ideas. Then, provide the three main points of Alexie’s essay (you practiced this
in Assignment 1). Finally, end with your thesis statement.
Sherman Alexies’ “Superman and Me” vividly captures both the power of literature and its
ability to change people’s lives. Alexie's narrative is underpinned by three key themes: the
early catalysts in his early life such as his upbringing on the Spokane Indian Reservation, his
father whom he cites as being instrumental in the development of his career as a reader and
writer, and the process of self-discoveries that he engaged himself into. Alexie explains the
importance of education and how it contributes to one's life and identity. The three themes
highlight the resonances of Alexie's experiences with the transformative power of education
and literature in my own life.

PART 2: Refer to your freewriting activity from Assignment 1. Do those ideas support your
thesis to share your own story as it relates to education? If so, use those as a starting point to
guide your body paragraphs. You are not tied to the freewriting work and can take a different
direction here if you choose. For these body paragraphs, use the boxes provided below to
complete your work.
Body Paragraph 2 (the beginning)
In my life, my father has been the primary influencer who significantly shaped my
introduction to reading, writing, and education. Much like Sherman Alexie’s father, my father
recognized the importance of literacy and education from an early age. He was not only an
avid reader herself but also a devoted father who instilled a love for books in me from the
moment I could comprehend words. As a child, I remember him reading bedtime stories, not
only making it a nightly ritual but also ensuring the stories were not just tales but avenues of
learning. This early exposure to books and storytelling laid the foundation for my passion for
reading and an insatiable curiosity about the world.

Body Paragraph 2 (the middle)

Moreover, my father’s influence extended to my educational journey. He played an active role
in my schooling, offering unwavering support and encouragement. He was my first teacher,
patiently helping me with my early lessons, and her involvement in my academic life
continued throughout my school years. His belief in the value of education, much like Alexie’s
father’s, motivated me to excel academically. My father’s influence was not limited to books;
he also taught me the significance of learning, not just for the sake of knowledge but as a
means to open doors and achieve one’s aspirations. His dedication and guidance have been
instrumental in shaping my educational foundation and my perspective on lifelong learning.
Body Paragraph 3 (the end)
My high school English teacher left a lasting impact on my introduction to development as a
reader and a writer. She introduced me to classic literature and helped me discover the depth
and beauty of language. Her teaching methods went beyond the classroom; she encouraged
independent reading and creative writing, fostering a deeper appreciation for literature and the
power of words. Her guidance sparked my interest in literature, sparked my interest in
literature, writing, and critical analysis, which eventually influenced my academic and career
choices. Just as Alexie mentions the importance of mentors in his essay, my teacher served as
a mentor who guided me toward a deeper understanding of literature and writing.

Conclusion
My father together with my high school English teacher played a very crucial role in my
initial exposure to reading, writing, and learning. They were not only my teachers but also my
mentors who, through their guidance, believed in my ability to learn. This impact does not only
have a significant effect on my academic grades, but it also improves my perception of life. They
provided me with knowledge, inquisitiveness, and my passion for literacy forever. These initial
exposures have not only set off a successful journey through academia but also have greatly
informed my growth and the capability to interact with the world perceptively and creatively.
The impact of these influential figures is a testament to the enduring value of mentorship,
support, and a nurturing educational environment, reinforcing the notion that, much like
Sherman Alexie’s essay illustrates, the transformative power of education and literature can be a
guiding light in one’s life.
