Expository Writing I

Introductory Assignment: My Path as a Writer

Writing has always served as a path to escape my own thoughts. Although I am young, I have

been assigned several essays and projects in which I had to apply writing to prove my

knowledge. I used to enjoy tasks that would allow me to expand my imagination. Stories, songs,

and creative essays granted me the opportunity to create a whole world from scratch. I would

place people from my personal life in my work and imagine stories through their eyes. Writing

has never truly felt like a burden when it came to school work, because I always ended up

enjoying it. Even when I was stressed about due dates or exams, blank papers served as

punching bags for me.

Growing up I found myself surrounded by a very musical environment. As I grew older I

learned how to decorate songs in a way that they would appear as an extension and

embellishment of my personal self. I especially enjoyed writing poems for school because then I

could cautiously share pieces of my thoughts to my professor’s and have them appreciate it in a

non biased way. I had fun selecting the topics, and would usually pick the most random themes

possible to challenge my creativity. However, I have kept most of my writing to myself, and

used it mostly for therapeutic purposes.

One of my biggest role models throughout my writing experience was my Spanish Literature

professor. He would come up with fun assignments that would push us to expand our vocabulary

and imagination. Once he wrote down a bunch of random phrases down in paper strips, placed

them in a bowl and had each of his students draw one. The assignment consisted in writing a

short story that included the phrase as its beginning. We would read novels and at the end of the

year choose one to film a short film about. Thanks to him, I got to write, act, and produce two

short films by the age of seventeen. He would also give out great recommendations for us to read

during our free time, and helped us expand our vocabulary every year. I even felt comfortable

sharing some of my projects with him. Still, I kept most of them for myself.

I don’t consider myself a writer because my personal writing style is not structured or very

planned. Most of my writing is done from my bed late at night when I have trouble sleeping. I

usually use it as a tool to manage my emotions and organize my thoughts. This is when I enjoy

writing the most because there are no rules to follow or worry about. I can express my most

sincere thoughts and display the most authentic version of myself. The fact that I write without

it being an assignment also sets me free from my bad procrastination habits because due dates

stop carrying weight on my body.

The most recent writing piece I completed was a ten page letter addressed to a person who

formed a big part of my life in the period of my transition to adulthood. I wrote it with the

purpose of seeking closure and moving forward. This letter had a significant impact on my
personality as well. It allowed me to learn from my past and observe my surroundings with

more clarity. It helped me persevere through my difficulties and develop tools for stress

management.

I am amazed by the different doors writing can open up for a person. I am very grateful for

the way it has been presented throughout my life, and I am hopeful that I can keep on applying

it in my future career path. I understand that as an international student, I still have a lot of

skills to strengthen and improve since English is my third language. I look forward to expanding

my knowledge and my writing style.
