(b) The barracuda is a top predator in marine ecosystems. It feeds on other fish. It is a fast and
aggressive predator. It is generally discouraged, however, from being caught and consumed by
humans because of the possibility of ciguatera poisoning which includes symptoms such as
vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness and vertigo. Ciguatera is a toxin produced by coral reef algae
(dynoflagellates).

Explain how this toxin might end up in the flesh of the barracuda. (3 marks)
