CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

This chapter highlights the impact of inflation on customers’ satisfaction to well-

known fast-food companies. The research problem that this study seeks to address and
the limitations on the study. According to the study of the Effect of Customer Satisfaction
on Consumer Spending Growth, it have said that customer satisfaction is the critical
success factor for the business organizations as satisfied customers can bring desired
growth and profitability whereas dissatisfied customers can make an organization out of
the market (Fornell, C., Rust R., Dekimpe M., 2021) & (Voka, I., Ruxho, F., 2022). In a
market economy, the cost of products and services is always subjected to change. Prices
varies in rising or falling. When prices for goods and services significantly increases,
inflation is present. If there is inflation, increases in the value of essentials like food can
have a negative effect on the society. It can affect almost all goods or services including
necessities like shelter, food, healthcare, and utilities. Once inflation is widespread across
the country’s economy, both consumers and businesses share a common danger regarding
with the possibility of future inflation (Boyle & Li, 2022).

Background of the Study

Nowadays, our country, Philippines is facing extreme inflation due to supply

issues and high gasoline costs. By the end of July this year, the inflation rate was 6.4
percent on a yearly basis, increased from 6.1 percent in June and 5.4 percent in May
(Sicat, 2022). Regarding from this result, it is serious inflation in which our country must
take control within the manageable of government’s policy viewpoint. Prices are rising,
and lately, the Peso struck an all-time low against US Dollars, which alarmed and
concern among investors, business sectors and consumers. Whether acquiring goods from
wholesale distributors or products from nearby farmers, it is reported that everything is
expensive. The food businesses are severely impacted by the inflation, which also
directly affects food prices. The quantity, amount, and quality of foods offered at the food
businesses as well as how much owners are willing to spend, are impacted by the

FT-CRD-113-00 | STI College- Gen. Santos, Inc. 1

increased cost. As the several factors that have been increased like food, gas, or housing,
specific ingredient has become much more expensive in relation to other things. Essential
resources are getting harder to find due to the ongoing rising costs.

The effect of too much inflation is hard to ignore as the cost-of-living increases,
and so does the cost of ingredients and menu items. The growing cost like food, gas, or
housing utilities is necessary to sustain a foodservice facility prompted to increased menu
prices. In this situation of rising inflation, some consumers are more likely to switch from
more expensive fine dining experiences to less expensive fast food options.

The researchers conducted this study to have an idea what are the impacts of
inflation particularly to the customer’s satisfaction in fast food chains in General Santos
City despite of the rising inflation in the country. To understand the customer satisfaction
level, the researchers will conduct surveys with queries of questionnaires that will be
addressed during the process. With the current state of our economy, food companies
must be prepared if there would be an impact and changes to maintain their revenue.

Research Questions

The purpose of this study is to determine the customer’s satisfaction in dining at

fast-food chains in General Santos City Malls. Additionally, this will also assess whether
inflation will have an impact on consumers' dining habits. The following questions are
hereby to address key questions in assessing the customer experience in dining at fast
food chains.

1. What are the impacts of inflation on customers satisfaction in fast-food chains in

General Santos City Malls in terms of:
a) Product packaging
b) Serving Size/ Portion / Quantity
c) Food Quality
2. What implication can be drawn from the findings of the study?

Significance of the Study

This study will be conducted to examine the impacts of inflation on customer

satisfaction in fast food chains in General Santos City Malls. In contrast of the rising
inflation of other goods, this study will help the management of fast food franchises in
General Santos City Malls to acknowledge the consumer experience. The researchers
expect that this research will lead in a complying result to the issue on the impact of
inflation on customer satisfaction in fast food chain companies.

The findings of this study will be beneficial to the following persons:

Future Entrepreneurs - This study will serve as a guide they need to take an action to
the

Consumers - This study will benefit to the consumers to

Researchers - This study will be beneficial for them as a reference if they will be
conducting a similar study to ours. This will serve as a guide to further understand the
impacts of inflation in customer satisfaction in fast food chains in General Santos City
Malls. This study will be their greater advantage to dig more knowledge on how inflation
affects the dining experience of the customers at fast food restaurants.

Scope and Limitations

This study’s main purpose is to determine the customer experiences. It

specifically measures the customer’s experience in dining at fast food chains to determine
the impact of inflation in the perspective. Only consumers of fast food restaurants here in
General Santos City Malls will be covered. Furthermore, the study will only have 100
respondents coming from the customers of fast food restaurants to determine the result of
the study. The participants will be chosen on purpose, and the procedures includes all

CHAPTER II
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter presents the review of related literature and related studies after the
thorough and in-depth search done by the researchers. The researchers assessed a variety
of studies on impacts of inflation on costumers’ satisfaction to Fast-Food Chain
Restaurants. These research papers including books, thesis, journal articles, and other
online platform are essential for conveying the researcher’s information. These enables
the researchers in achieving their objectives by providing information from related
studies and allowing them to make changes as necessary.

Inflation

The price of products generally and continually rising is referred to as inflation. A

rise in product prices will immediately have an impact on how core businesses produce
their products since ingredients are likewise more expensive. High production cost will
have an impact on the selling price, lowering consumers' purchasing power. That might
have a negative effect on the business's performance, which would therefore decrease the
stock's return. Unexpected inflation will be negative for the economy of the business. The
company's profitability will fall if the rise in production costs is larger than the price it
would get. The distribution of profits will also decrease if a company's profitability
decreases, which will have an impact on stock returns (Suharyanto & Zaki, 2021).

Inflation is a big issue in many countries because it reduces the buying power of
money when the prices of goods and services rise. Inflation has an influence on
profitability through affecting sales volume as well as the amount of costs. Manufacturing
firms have had a significant impact on the economy during the last three decades,
accounting for about 80% of total country exports. The gross profits collected from the
company's comprehensive income statement might show the company's success.
Manufacturing enterprises must be mindful of the influence of inflation to maintain their
performance (Ali and Ibrahim, 2018).

FT-CRD-113-00 | STI College- Gen. Santos, Inc. 5

Both global economic development and inflation rates have been unstable.
Furthermore, growth rates have largely fallen behind inflation rates for a very long time.
In the 1970s, nations with high inflation, particularly those in Latin America, started to
see drop in growth rates, which led to the creation of the idea that inflation has negative
effects rather than positive benefits on economic growth. Evidence from some Asian
nations, including India, demonstrating the connection between inflation and economic
growth, revealed that while India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth rate increased
from 3.5% in the 1970s to 5.5% in the 1980s, the country’s inflation rate steadily
increased from an annual average of 1.7% in the 1950s to 6.4% in the 1960s and then to
9.0% in the 1970s only before comparatively decreasing to 8.0% in the 1980s. High rates
of inflation, massive balance of payments imbalances, decreasing domestic savings,
rising government spending, dropping agricultural production, and decreased industrial
production consumption were strongly related to these factors, which in turn affected
economic growth (Kasidi & Mwakanemela, 2018).

Furthermore, Inflation appeared to be an issue two years ago, when millions of

people were unemployed and central bankers and politicians were working to get the U.S.
economy out of a virus outbreak crisis. Many of the same authorities believed that the
price increases were "temporary" and the result of congested supply chains, staff
shortages, and other problems that would sort problems earlier rather than later annually
afterwards, with unemployment dropping and the inflation rate rising. For instance,
inflation rates in Russia increased gradually during the epidemic before rising after its
battle of Ukraine. Early in the epidemic, inflation dropped in Indonesia and has been
there before. Too-low inflation rates have also been a long-standing problem for Japan
(Desilver, 2022).

Food Inflation

Several reasons related to a change in supply, trade, global pricing, food

FT-CRD-113-00 | STI College- Gen. Santos, Inc. 6

management, speculative activities, and demands have contributed to the development of
food inflation and the unusually high level of food prices towards the end of 2009. Others
of these factors have short-term effects, some have long-term effects, and some have both
short-term and long-term effects (Chand, 2020).

Furthermore, Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) figures, The Philippines

produced 1.8 million metric tons of sugar domestically as of July 31, 2022, for the crop
year 2021-2022. This is much less than the previous harvest years, which generated an
average of 2.1 million tonnes of sugar. The price of sugar has risen to almost ₱100 per
kilogram, roughly double the price of last year. This Results to farm prices in the
Philippines have risen sharply over the past few months, from an average of about
₱1,974/50kg in January to as high as ₱2,488/50 kg in July. This is a result of several
factors, including the impact of Typhoon Odette and Agaton on the agri-food sector and
the rising energy costs. The Philippine economy has been hit hard by the shutdown of
several soft drink bottling operations owned by the big three soda manufacturers (Coca
Cola, Pepsi, and ARC) this suggests enormous layoffs, displacing hundreds if not
thousands of Filipinos, especially as commodity prices continue to rise. This has a
cascading effect on the rate of our economic recovery since such a loss in income will
have a significant impact on aggregate demand (Pangilinan, 2022).

Food costs are likely to increase in the foreseeable future, at least due to the
massive increase in the prices of agricultural products. In addition, earnings have
decreased, and food costs have risen because of the current financial crisis. Not only does
this weaken nutritional quality, but it also led to a decrease spending on health, sanitation,
and education, all of which have a negative impact on health and nutrition outcomes. In
conclusion to him, fighting poor nutrition in underdeveloped nations will become more
challenging as food prices go up. This intention will be significantly more challenging to
achieve in countries where men are preferred in the household level allocation of non-
staple foods (Bouis, 2017).

FT-CRD-113-00 | STI College- Gen. Santos, Inc. 7

Food Inflation to Customers

Lower-income consumers who spend a large portion of their household budget on

food are more likely to be negatively impacted by rising food prices, to be more
responsive to price changes, and to be forced to make more difficult budgetary trade-offs
than higher-income consumers with smaller food budget shares. Several domestic
initiatives in the United States are designed to assist customers in meeting their
household food and nutrition needs during economic downturns when household
purchasing power is reduced. Furthermore, the United States has a long history of giving
major international food aid during times of famine or food scarcity across the world.
Food price inflation has a direct impact on both local and foreign food aid programs in
the United States (Schnepf, 2019).

In addition, poor households spending power is limited by high food prices, which
also worsen nutritional quality and overall energy intake, affecting the growth and
cognitive development of children. They analyse the effects of early-life exposure to food
inflation on one’s health. The study correlates local food inflation with the first several
months of each child’s life after birth. It indicates that early childhood exposure to food
inflation has negative medium- and long-term effects on a child’s health. The results
show that food inflation is more widespread than is normally considered to be a concern
for monetary policy. It has broad effects on children’s health, with the potential to harm
future health, academic success, employment prospects, family formation, social conduct,
and numerous other later-life outcomes. This study emphasizes that these high inflation
events are not just temporary and have long-term effects on health as most developing
nations continue to face critical food inflation (Woldemichael, 2022).

Poor farmers ought to have the opportunity to increase both productivity and
income known for its high price of food. There is no assurance that small farmers will
gain the benefits of rising production and high revenues over time. Poor customers are
being taken off by high food costs because they spend a considerably bigger proportion
of their income on food than do wealthier consumers. Poor urban customers who buy

FT-CRD-113-00 | STI College- Gen. Santos, Inc. 8

every of their food would suffer the most. Consumers benefited from the years of lower
food costs, but farmers weren't doing as well. Furthermore, while it is unlikely that urban
consumers would applaud rising food costs that empty their wallets, the higher prices
should potentially reward farmers with larger income and standard of living (Fritschel,
2018).

The poor farmer will gain as the price of food harvests rises since they may sell
their items for more money. Like how exporting other goods has a beneficial effect on
inflation, increasing food exports is likely to cause a shortage of goods in the regional
economy, which will drive up prices for food items. Due to the payment amount and low
domestic currency value, importing food items raises food prices. These imports resulted
in a net income, which created a balance of payment issue. The government had to
borrow money from both local and international sources to deal with the issue, which led
to a rise in the amount of money in circulation and inflation altogether Sultana &
Qayyum, 2018).

The brighter futures might not be enough to reassure many poor people, as the
global recovery is still weak as the nation deals with further COVID-19 cases. Although
rising food prices may increase the income of poor farmers, the majority of them are also
food supply consumers. As a result, most people in low-income nations are highly
vulnerable to an increase in food prices, and these countries' governments lack the
financial resources necessary to preserve the spending of low-income families, prevent
the spread of food insecurity, and improve diets. The international community should
consider strengthening this capability through extra financial aid a top priority right away
given the global implications of food price increases (Vos, 2021).

CHAPTER III
THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK/CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

A theoretical framework is used to limit the scope of the relevant data by focusing on
specific variables and defining the specific viewpoint [framework] that the researcher
will take in analyzing and interpreting the data to be gathered.

A conceptual framework is a structure that the researcher believes can best explain the
natural progression of the phenomenon to be studied. It is the researcher’s explanation of
how the research problem would be explored. The conceptual framework describes the
relationship between the main concepts of a study. The format of the conceptual
framework can be visual (or diagrammatic), narrative (or descriptive), or a combination
of visual and narrative.

CHAPTER IV
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the methods of the study. It is divided into three section: (1)
Research Design, (2) Methodology, and (3) Statistical Data Analysis Procedure. Research
Design refers to our overall strategy that was used and integrated in the components of
the study. Methodology describes our participants, locale of the study, research
instruments, and data gathering. Statistical Data Analysis Procedure shows the scoring
and the statistical analysis that was used to interpret the gathered data.

Research Design

The researchers used a quantitative research design. This was used to see the
customer experience and if there is an impact of inflation in dining at fast food
restaurants. Through this method, the researchers were able to determine customer
satisfaction despite the current inflation in the country.

The quantitative research design used was able to help the researchers to gather
reliable information from the respondents. The researchers were able to see the factors in
which affecting customer experience towards the rising of inflation.
