FINDING RIGHTING MOMENT PROBLEMS – ASSIGNMENT EXAMPLES

FOR R-MOMENTS
1. A ship has a displacement of 7700 tonnes and a KM of 8.92 m. In its present loaded
condition, the KG is. 6.59 m.

(a) Calculate the moment of statical stability when a ship is heeled to 8 degrees
(b) A weight of 170 tonnes is shifted from the lower hold (kg 4.20 m) to the upper
deck (kg 7.10 m)
Calculate the moment of statical stability that will now exist if the ship is again
heeled to 7 degrees.

2. A ship has a displacement of 8780 tonnes and a KM of 8.58 m. In its present loaded
condition, the KG is. 7.50 m.

(a) Calculate the moment of statical stability when a ship is heeled to 6 degrees

(b) A weight of 250 tonnes is shifted from the lower hold (kg 3.80 m) to the
upper deck (kg 9.50 m)

Calculate the moment of statical stability that will now exist if the ship is again
heeled to 5 degrees.

3. A ship has an initial displacement of 13650 tonnes, KG 6.58 m and KM 8.95 m.

(a) Calculate the moment of statical stability when a ship is heeled to 5 degrees

(b) Cargo is now worked as follows: Load 180 tonnes at kg 2.00 m; Load174 tonnes on
deck at kg9.85 m;

Shift 75 tonnes from a position in the lower hold (2.90 m) to a position on deck (kg
10.17 m.
Calculate the moment of statical stability now available if the ship is heeled to 5
degrees.

Assume KM remains constant.

4. A ship has an initial displacement of 12590 tonnes, KG 7.78 m and KM 9.95 m.

(a) Calculate the moment of statical stability when a ship is heeled to 7 degrees

(b) Cargo is now worked as follows: Load 165 tonnes at kg 1.80 m; Load 164 tonnes on
deck at kg 9.25 m;

Shift 96 tonnes from a position in the lower hold (1.90 m) to a position on deck (kg
10.11 m.

Calculate the moment of statical stability now available if the ship is heeled to 5
degrees.

Assume KM remains constant.
