3. Record System Settings and Update Notes

3.1 Recording System Settings
1. As part of this update, some user settings may be reset to default values.

CRITICAL

It is important that you record all settings that may be important to the aircraft
owner/operator prior to performing this update.

Specific items that may reset to default values may include:

• GPS antenna vertical - Settable in Maintenance mode.
• All settings on the "Main System Config Page" - Settable in Maintenance
mode.
• All data blocks -- Settable in Flight Mode
• All Volume settings -- Settable in Flight Mode
• All "User Options" -- Settable in Flight Mode
• All FMS Setup values -- Settable in Flight Mode
• All Map Setup values -- Settable in Flight Mode.
• User profiles

NOTE

• See the appropriate Installation Manual listed in section 1.13* for instructions on how to set
the Maintenance Mode accessible settings.
• See Pilot Guide for instructions on how to set the Flight Mode accessible settings.

* Choose the installation manual as appropriate for the aircraft being updated.

Revision: 16 Service Bulletin 601-00182-034

Date: 10 February 2023 Page 6 of 18
CRITICAL

If the unit is currently at SW release 10.1.0.0, 10.1.1.0, 10.1.2.0 or 10.1.3.0 the user options
cannot be downloaded and restored. Doing so may damage the system configuration and the
unit will have to be returned to Avidyne for repair. If you are upgrading a software release
prior to 10.2.0.0 the settings must be manually recorded and restored.

3.2 Upgrading Multiple Systems

• If the aircraft contains multiple 700-00182-() or 700-00179-() systems, this Service
Bulletin must be executed on all systems.

CRITICAL

In aircraft with multiple systems:

• Update only one system at a time.
• Make sure that the system not being upgraded is always powered off during the
upgrade.
• Failure to follow this procedure may require that the system be returned to Avidyne
for repair and will incur a repair charge of $1200.00.

• If using the same USB drive to update more than one system, you must either:

a) Reload the “RUNONCE” automatic load command script file 500-00228-000

Rev 02 following each successful update procedure.
Or
b) Manually select the update “Load 10.3.1.2” as per Section 4.2 step 4.

CRITICAL

After downloading the update files from the website right click on the “RUNONCE” file and
click on “Properties”. Ensure that at the bottom of the pop up in Attributes that the Read-
only box is UNCHECKED. If it is checked, click on the Read-only box to UNCHECK it. If the
Read-only box is checked, and you attempt the SW update the update will skip a major
portion of the update resulting in a failed update attempt. See the pictures on following page
of the Read-only box CHECKED and UNCHECKED.

4. Updating the System
4.1 Cautions and Notes

NOTE

If the system reports any error(s) other than errors listed in the steps below, contact
Avidyne Technical support at +1-888-723-7592 or techsupport@avidyne.com.

The aircraft tail number can be set on the "Main System Config" page accessed from
Maintenance mode. See Appropriate Installation Manual or Pilot Guide for further
instructions.

If the system is not currently at one of the software versions listed in section 1.5
do not proceed.

You can obtain 601-00182-013 Service Bulletin Upgrade to release 10.1.0.0 from the Avidyne
Dealer web site dealers.avidyne.com. If needed the SW upgrade kit to bring the IFD to Release
10.1.0.0 or higher may be ordered by contacting Avidyne Sales at +1-888-723-7593 and
requesting kit part number 850-00182-500.

CRITICAL

• Failure to diligently and rigorously follow the steps outlined below may result in a
system that must be returned to Avidyne for repair incurring a charge of $1200.00.

• Ensure that you currently have one of the releases shown in the table under section
1.5 of this document.

• Confirm the aircraft tail number has been properly set prior to performing this
update. Failure to set this field may cause some options to become disabled following
the update.

Date: 10 February 2023 Page 9 of 18
NOTE
• The following steps could require 20 – 120 minutes of time to complete.
• The update is highly automated and requires little human intervention.
• At times the Avidyne System will reboot and resume operation. This is normal. Take no
action.
• At times the Avidyne System will appear to have powered off. This is normal. Take no
action.
• At times, the progress bar may report that a particular step is 100% complete yet the system
will not immediately advance to the next step. This is normal. Take no action.
• At times the Avidyne System will prompt you for input. In these cases, you will be offered
the opportunity to "Proceed" or "Cancel". If you "Cancel", the operation will claim to have
completed with "error". This is normal and you will be able to restart the update later
without taking any extraordinary actions. See example pictures below:

CRITICAL

Do not turn off power to the Avidyne System while the update is in progress unless the on-

Avidyne for repair.
• If instructed to do so, power down the Avidyne System using one of the following:
o Avionics master switch,
o System power switch
o System circuit breaker.
• Turn the Avidyne System back on using the same method used to power it down.
• Aircraft battery supply may not be sufficient to power the Avidyne System for the
time required to complete the update.
o Avidyne suggests use of a ground-power source
o A battery tender is not sufficient
o You may choose to run the aircraft, with the alternator supplying voltage for
the duration of the update.

CRITICAL

Do not remove the USB drive during the update.

• If performing the update on a bench, power must be supplied to both connectors P5001
and P5002 on IFD540/550s/Atlas and Helios units and P4001 and P4002 on IFD440s.
Failure to supply power to both connectors will result in a failed update.

o Should this happen, you can correct the error by:

1. Powering off the Avidyne System using the power switch, avionics
master switch or the circuit breaker.
2. Make sure that you leave the USB drive in the USB port.
3. Add the missing power connections to both P5001 and P5002 on the
IFD540/550/Atlas/Helios or P4001 and P4002 on the IFD440.
4. Turn the Avidyne System power back on using the same method
used to power off the system and the update will resume.
