1. In your own words, what is Filipinology? What words can you associate
with the word

Filipinology? (10 points)

ANSWER: Filipinology or Philippine Studies refers to the study of the

Philippines. It encompasses the study of Filipino history, Filipino culture,
Philippine languages, Filipino society, Filipino life, Filipino psyche or Filipino
psychology, Filipino politics, and Filipino government.

2. Why study Filipinology? Is Filipino values also important in Filipinology

study? Then

why? (15 points)

ANSWER: I think as with any society, studying its language can help you
understand the society’s perspective, how they view the world, how they see
themselves and others. It gives you a glimpse into the minds and hearts of
the people you are studying. This is why I think getting at least a basic
understanding of the Filipino language is essential when studying Filipino
society.

However, it is also important to note that Filipino society is not homogenous.

Not all Filipinos use the Filipino language in their daily life. Some use local
languages like Cebuano, Ilokano, Waray, Maranao, etc. So you also have to
take into account which sector or area of Filipino society you are studying.
4. How important is culture to the Filipinos? Give at least two examples that

ANSWER: Culture is the lifeblood of a vibrant society, expressed in the many

ways we tell our stories, celebrate, remember the past, entertain ourselves,
and imagine the future. Our creative expression helps define who we are, and
helps us see the world through the eyes of others.
