HISTORY OF PLACES

NANDI HILLS, BANGALORE

Nandi Hills, a small albeit beautiful town, is just 60 km away from the city of Bangalore and
has emerged as the perfect weekend getaway for its people.

Even though it is most well-known for its viewpoints and its greenery, Nandi Hills is also a
popular historical fortress that is home to a number of temples, monuments and shrines.

The place was previously used by the famous ruler Tipu Sultan as a summer retreat, and several
traces of the Sultan’s life and legacy can be found in the area.

His summer residence can still be found in Nandi Hills. The house was called Tashk-e-Jannat,
whose painted walls, intricate archways, high pillars and artfully crafted ceilings attract tourists
and visitors even today.

Nandi Hills is also home to some famous temples and shrines such as the Bhoga Nandeeshwara
Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva and his companions- Parvati and Nandi.

This temple is also an architectural wonder and pilgrimage spot because it is one of the oldest
temples in the area.

Apart from its historical sites and heritage monuments, Nandi Hills is also famous for its
trekking trails, cycling routes and adventure sports such as paragliding.

It is truly the perfect place to enjoy a peaceful retreat from life in the city and take in some of
the best views the countryside has to offer.

There are many stories about the origin of the name Nandi Hills. During the Chola period,
Nandi Hills was called Anandagiri meaning The Hill of Happiness.

It is also perhaps called Nandi Hills because the hills resemble a sleeping bull. Another theory
holds that the hill gets its name from an ancient, 1300-year-old, Dravidian-style temple, and
for the Nandi (bull), statue situated on this hill.

• Hike up to the Nandi Hills through the trails covered with natural scenic beauty.
• Visit the incredible Jaramadagu falls encircled by lush, in the Chikkaballapur region.
• Get a chance to cycle along the hills on the natural pathway.
• Visit the Amaranarayana Temple and get spiritual insights and vibes and witness the
marvelous Tashk-e-jannat, a palace brilliantly carved pillars and beautifully painted
walls.
• Seek peace and quiet away from the chaotic world at the cave near the spot and get a
chance to be amidst the clouds at the ‘envy of the heavens’.
• Nandi Hills is one of the best vantage points from where one can enjoy the glistening
sunrises and sunsets.

Historical Significance

It is believed that the fort walls here were built by the Paleyagars of Chikkaballapura and later
strengthened by Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan.

It was under the Maratha control for some time.

The precipice to the south-west has the name “Tipu’s Drop”, which is believed as the place
where prisoners condemned to death were pushed down to the valley below.

At the centre of the plateau, a big water pool has been dug out and a rectangular stone structure
is built for the storage of water.

The pool is named “Amrit Sarovar.”

Two ancient temples dedicated to Lord Shiva are located in the Hills.

The Yoganandishwara Temple on top of the Nandi Hills has the architecture of the Chola style.

The garbhagriha entrance of this temple has decorative brass covered doors and dwarapalakas
(door keepers) on either side.

It is said that these doorkeeper images were the gifts of Krishnadevaraya, the Vijayanagara
ruler. Located in a village Nandi Grama near to Nandi Hills is the Bhoganandishwara Temple.

The original temple belongs to a period prior to the 9th century A.D. with later additions during
Chola, Hoysala and Vijayanagara periods.

In this Bhoganandishwara temple complex, there are two separate garbhagrihas in one straight
line, with separate Nandimantapas. Of these Nandimantapas, one has a little garbhagriha also.

The temple to the north is dedicated to Lord Bhoganandishwara and the southern one to Lord
Arunachaleswara. The exquisite stone fringes in them display ornate workmanship and artistry.

Tourism can be promoted in various forms:

Using social media and Influencer Marketing

• Just like small and large business you should also start by identifying your target
market. Your target campaigns should be according to people’s interest. You can
promote your tourists spot by describing how close it is to the airport, the low cost
you offer and the scenic beauty all around the place.

• We can even shoot some good videos and pictures of the place and post it on
social media, so that we could spread the awareness and the rare facts of the place
over the internet. Promote your tourist spot on travel websites

• People nowadays always consult travel websites before making a decision about
where they want to travel. Using paid ads and promotions to promote tourist
destinations will definitely increase people’s interest to visit the place.

BENEFITS TO SOCIETY

Importance of tourism arises from the numerous benefits and advantages it brings to
any host country. But real importance of tourism comes from its nature and how it is
defined & structured. And this is what we will explain here. Tourism contributes
towards complete growth and development of a country: one, by bringing numerous
economic values & benefits; and, second, helping in build country's brand value,
image & identity. Tourism industry goes beyond attractive destinations, to being an
important economic growth contributor.

Tourism no doubt brings with it tremendous economic value for a country.

Tourism is one of the important sources of employment generation and foreign

exchange earnings for a country. Due to all this tourism gains much more economic
importance for any country.

➢ Tourism is an important aspect of economic growth and the development of a nation.

According to the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), global tourism is
expected to reach 1.6 billion (in terms of international arrivals) by the year 2020.
➢ Tourism management is generally considered a bright and potential employment sector
as it offers a wide variety of career opportunities in both the private and public sector.
➢ In recent time, the nation has witnessed an extensive growth in the field of travel and
tourism enabling the global visitors to understand and witness the cultural diversity the
country has. It is reported that in contrast to global tourism industry, India has
outperformed the volume of foreign tourist’s manifold. This immense growth has been
an integral contributor to the country’s revenue source cementing the economic structure
of India.

➢ Travel and tourism are that the largest job holder of exchange world-wide and employs
several individuals directly or indirectly through associated service industries.
➢ This trade includes everything from the govt. tourism departments and major
