CURRICULUM OVERVIEW

The Simplified Math Curriculum™ was created by two passionate and

experienced educators: Greg Coleman from Mr. Elementary Math and Kristin Rivera
from One Stop Teacher Shop.
As classroom teachers, curriculum designers, professional development presenters,
a math intervention specialist, a math curriculum coach, and a homeschooling
parent, Kristin and Greg have pulled from their professional and personal experiences
to develop a well-rounded curriculum that supports student learning and promotes
quality instruction.

It was our goal when designing this curriculum to make it…

✓ Effective in teaching the standards
✓ Easy to implement for teachers of all levels
✓ Engaging for students

The Simplified Math Curriculum™ provides you with everything you need to TEACH,
PRACTICE, and ASSESS all grade level standards.

TEACH
PRE-PLANNING TOOLS
Each unit comes with a Unit Flow Chart and a Standards
Overview page. These tools will help you with pacing of
the unit and are a great tool to keep with your lesson
plans. We recommend completing one lesson per day.
However, you know your students best. You can also
spread a lesson over two days when needed.

TEACHING ROADMAP
Every lesson begins with a Teaching Roadmap. This is similar
to a lesson plan in that it includes your lesson objective,
materials needed for the lesson, a lesson overview with
notes, common misconceptions (if applicable) and ideas
for differentiation (intervention/extension). You can keep
these with your lesson plans to help guide you each day.

INTERACTIVE LESSON PRESENTATIONS

Each lesson starts with a presentation that is
interactive and engaging. The presentation includes
a modeling section (Watch Me First), a guided
practice section (Let’s Work Together), and an
independent practice section (Your Turn). The most
effective way of teaching students is in a small group
setting. However, you can also use these lessons with
a whole group.

STUDENT MATH JOURNALS

Each unit includes a math journal. This is where
students will take notes and follow along with each
lesson. We recommend students keep all completed
journals in a folder or binder so that they can refer to
them throughout the school year. You can use the
included journal cover to help organize student work.

TEACH
ANCHOR CHARTS
Each unit includes a handful of anchor charts for the
most important concepts. You can print the anchor
charts in a larger size and hang them in your classroom.
Or, you can have students keep a copy in their math
journals. There are two versions of each anchor chart.
One version is fully completed, and the other version is
partially completed so that you can fill in the remaining
sections with your students.

PRINTABLE MATH MANIPULATIVES

Every unit includes printable math
manipulatives. If you do not have access to your
own, you can use these with your students
throughout the lessons. We do include links to
some recommended manipulatives and
resources in another file.

PRACTICE
DAILY WARM-UPS
Each lesson begins with a short warm-up that focuses on
number sense or math fluency. Warm-ups are not meant to be
graded and are just for practice. Answer keys are provided in
a PowerPoint format so that they can be projected on the
board and reviewed before the lesson begins.

STUDENT MATH JOURNALS

Student Math Journals include opportunities for
guided and independent practice. Answer keys are
embedded in the lesson presentation so that students
can get immediate feedback on their work.

“EXTRA PRACTICE” ACTIVITIES

Every lesson includes an “Extra Practice” activity. This is a
great way to extend learning and allow students to
mater specific skills. You can use the extra practice
activities for early finishers, extension activities, or
centers.

UNIT REVIEW GAME

Every unit concludes with a review game. This game
can be played as a whole class or in small groups.
This review activity is the perfect way to review prior
to the post-test.

MATH VOCABULARY BOOK

It’s important for students to be familiar with math
vocabulary. Students can work on their vocabulary books
throughout the unit, in centers, or independently. This is a
great activity for early finishers.

ASSESSMENT
PRE-TEST
Students will begin each unit with a brief overview of what
they will be learning, and they will take a pre-test. After
students complete the pre-test, you can use the included
data analysis charts to help you evaluate the results. This
data can be used to guide instruction and group students
appropriately.

CHECK POINT QUIZ

A check point quiz is given halfway through each unit,
depending on the length of the unit. This can be taken
as a grade and can be used as a tool to help you
evaluate student learning at this point.

POST-TEST
Students will take a post-test at the end of a unit. Post-
tests include a variety of questions and cover all
standards taught throughout the unit. You can use the
included data charts to track student progress. This
assessment will let you know when/if reteaching is
necessary.
**All assessments are also available in Google Forms

STUDENT SELF-REFLECTION SLIPS

At the end of every lesson, students are invited to self-
reflect on their progress. This helps students take
responsibility for their own learning and allows the
teacher to see which students require additional
help.
