EXPERIMENT N°2: CONSTRUCTION OF A DC POWER SUPPLY

1. INTRODUCTION

Most electronic devices such as TV, personal computer, mobile phones etc., use DC power
supply to function. Note that all these apparatus use active electronic components (transistors,
diodes) and integrated circuits (programmable or not) which also need DC power source to
work. For these reasons, it is important to understand how to construct a simple DC power
supply using a Junction diode.

2. SIMPLE DC POWER SOURCE (HALFWAVE RECTIFIER)

2.1. AIM
The aim of this practical exercise is to make use of the Junction Diode to convert Alternating
Current (AC) to Direct Current (DC) through a process called Rectification.
2.2. MATERIALS TO USE
▪ Transformer (220V/6V)
▪ Resistor (1KΩ)
▪ Capacitors (100 µF, 1000µF)
▪ Rectifier diode (1N4001 )
▪ Multimeter
▪ Project board

2.3. Prelab
Consider the circuit of Figure 1:
a) Use the Proteus Software to simulate the circuit
b) Visualise the input waveform of the voltage V1 at the secondary of the transformer
and the output waveform of the voltage V2 across the resistor (RCH) when the
capacitor (C1) is not connected to the circuit. Also Read the voltages V1rms , V2avg and
the current I1avg .

c) Repeat (b) when C1=100 µF is connected.

d) Repeat (b) when C1=1000 µF is connected.
e) Compare the results in (b), (c) and (d)

2.4. EXPERIMENTAL WORK

2.4.1. Construct the rectifier circuit of Figure 1 on a project board.

2.4.2. Visualise using an oscilloscope and sketch the output waveforms of V1 and V2.
Also Read the voltages V1rms , V2avg and the current I1avg and fill the tables below
when:

C1 is not connected

Sketch the waveforms:

Read and Fill

V1 V2 I1

C1 is connected and the value is C1=100 µF

2.4.3 Compare the results obtained for the three cases of C1 and conclude.

2.4.4 Compare the results obtained practically with those obtained through simulations and
conclude.

NB: All students are expected to do the simulations. Also, each group is expected to
submit a report.
