Name: _____________________ Date: ____________________

Solve the following problems.

1. How much heat is required to increase the temperature of an iron block of mass 2 kg from 30°C to 80°C?
(specific heat of iron is 450 J/kg°C).

2. If it takes 9000J of heat to raise a 4.5 kg of an object by 50°C, what is the specific heat of the object?

3. 7050 J of heat energy is given to increase the temperature of a silver block with a mass of 500g. If the silver
block is initially 10°C, what is the final temperature of the silver block? (specific heat of silver is 235 J/kg°C).

4. How much heat is needed for boiling water with a mass of 3 kg to completely turn into gas? (Heat of
vaporization of water is 2.26 x 10⁶ J/kg)
5. How much heat is needed to turn an ice block of mass 5 kg at -20°C into water of 50°C? (specific heat of water is
4200 J/kg°C, specific heat of ice is 2060 J/kg°C and heat of fusion of ice is 3.34 x 10⁵ J/kg)

6. How much heat is needed to change 400 g of ice at -40°C to steam at 100°C? (specific heat of water is 4200
J/kg°C ; specific heat of ice is 2060 J/kg°C ; heat of fusion of ice is 3.34 x 10⁵ J/kg and heat of vaporization of
water is2.26 x 10⁶ J/kg)

7. In an experiment, 5 kg of gold at 40°C is dropped into 3 kg of an unknown liquid at 10°C. The mixture reached a
temperature of 20°C. What is the specific heat of the unknown liquid? (Specific heat of gold is 129 J/kg°C)
