Design in the
Philippines: FILM
“I deserve an explanation! I
deserve an acceptable
reason!”

•Starting Over Again (2014)

•“Pero bakit parang galit ka? Pero bakit kasalanan
ko?
maternal instincts mo. I wish I had your charm
and innocence. Sana naging adventurous din ako
kagaya ni Alex.

•Four Sisters and a Wedding (2013)

POPOY- She loved me at my worst. You had
me at my best. At binalewala mo lahat yun.”
BASHA- “Popoy, iyon ba ang talaga tingin mo?
I just made a choice.”
POPOY- “And you chose to break my heart.“

•One More Chance (2007)

•“Wala akong ginagawang masama!”
•“Akala mo lang wala pero meron, meron,
meron!”

•Bata, Bata, Paano Ka Ginawa? (1998)

•“My brother is not a pig! “My
brother is not a pig! Ang kapatid
koý tao, hindi baboy damo!”

•Minsa’y Isang Gamu-gamo (1976)

“Kayong mga lalaki, akala ‘nyo pag nagbabae kayo nasasaktan
‘nyo lang kami. Makikipagchuchakan kayo tapos iniexpect ‘nyo

Bakit niya kaya nagawa
iyon? Am I not enough? May kulang ba sa akin? May
mali ba sa akin? Pangit ba ako? Pangit ba ang katawan
ko? Kapalit-palit ba ako?“

My Ex and Whys (2017)

•“George, I’m sorry.“
•“And what makes that sorry different from
all of your other sorrys before? Halos pitong
At

•The Hows of Us (2018)

•Philippine films began with the introduction of
the first moving pictures to the country on
January 1, 1897 at the Salon de Pertierra in
Manila. Then during the 1930s, at the film genre
was being discovered as a new medium of art,
the scripts and characterizations were influenced
by popular theater and familiar local literature.
Elements of Philippine Films
•1. Music and Musical Director
•2. Make-up, Coiffeur and Costumes
•3. Acting and the Stars
•4. Color in the Movies
•5. Set and Arts Director
The Collaborative Art
of Filmmaking
Filmmaking involves
entire teams of artists,
writers, and production
experts, supported by
technicians taking charge of
the cameras, lighting
equipment, sets, props,
costumes, and the like—all
under the supervision of a
film director.
 Film directing- He or
she conceptualizes the scenes,
directs the acting, supervises
the cinematography and
finally the editing and sound
dubbing in much the same
way as a visual artist
composes an artwork. Clearly,
however, the director does
not do all these alone.
Acting - First and foremost,
there was the art of acting for
film. With live theater as the
only form of acting at that time,
film actors had to learn to
express themselves without the
exaggerated facial expressions
and gestures used on stage.
With the addition of sound in
the 1930s, they then had to
learn to deliver their lines
naturally and believably.
Cinematography -
Behind the scenes, there was
cinematography or the art of
film camera work. This
captured the director’s vision
of each scene through
camera placement and
movement, lighting, and
other special techniques.
• Editing - This was joined by
film editing, the art of selecting
the precise sections of film,
then sequencing and joining
them to achieve the director’s
desired visual and emotional
effect. Sound editing was also
developed, as films began to
include more ambitious effects
beyond the dialogue and
background music
Production/Set design -
Underlying all these was the art
of production and set design. This
recreated in physical terms—
through location, scenery, sets,
lighting, costumes, and props—
the mental image that the
director had of how each scene
should look, what period it should
depict, and what atmosphere it
should convey.
• Again, all these allied arts were made possible through
the advances of modern technology. From
cumbersome machines that could barely be moved,
today’s highly- sophisticated cameras and accessories
can handle even the most demanding camera work.
From the era of silent films, today’s films incorporate a
vast range of voice, music, and sound effects to suit an
ever-widening array of film genres. From manual
rendering, today’s animated films use the awesome
capabilities of computers to amaze moviegoers of all
ages.
