OPERA
• Opera was first employed in the Italian phrase opera
drammatica in musica (a dramatic work, or play,
set to music).
• In the West, opera first appeared in Florence, Italy
• The fundamental premise of opera is that sung
music can heighten the emotional intensity of a
dramatic text.
• LIBRETTO: The text that conveys the story of the
opera, written in poetic verse.
OPERA
• Opera incorporates many of the elements
of spoken theatre, such as acting,
scenery, and costumes and sometimes
includes dance.
• The performance is typically given in an
opera house, accompanied by an orchestra
or smaller musical ensemble.
OPERA SERIA

• Opera seria (usually called dramma per musica


or melodramma serio) is an Italian musical
term which refers to the noble and "serious"
style of Italian opera that predominated in
Europe from the 1710s to 1770.

OPERA BUFFA
• Opera buffa was first used as an informal description
of Italian comic operas variously classified by their
authors as "commedia in musica", "commedia per
musica", "dramma bernesco", "dramma comico",
"divertimento giocoso".It is mainly used for 18th
century Italian comic operas

BALLET
• Ballet is a type of performance dance that
originated in the Italian Renaissance courts of the
15th century and later developed into a concert
dance form in France and Russia.
• Ballet may also refer to a ballet dance work, which
consists of the choreography and music for a
ballet production. A well-known example of this is
The Nutcracker, a two-act ballet that was
originally choreographed by Marius Petipa and
Lev Ivanov with a music score by Pyotr Ilyich
Tchaikovsky.

MUSICAL PLAY

• Include songs, spoken dialogue, acting, and


dancing, it may be distinguished by the equal
importance given to music as compared with the
dialogues, movements and other elements of
works.
MUSICAL PLAY ELEMENTS

BOOK OR SCRIPT
• Refers to the story, character development, and
dramatic structure, including spoken dialogue and
stage directions. The dialogue and lyrics together,
which are sometimes referred to as the libretto.

• The music and lyrics together
• The interpretation of a musical by it creative team
heavily influences the way a musical is presented.

FILM OR MOTION PICTURE
• It is essentially the art of the moving pictures
and its most important medium is motion
photography.
• Film piece together certain elements from
other art forms like music, literature, dance,
drama, and visual arts make a complex
whole.
• It makes use of sound and lighting
extensively and brings about its intellectual,
imaginative, and technical aspects.
NATURE AND VALUES OF FILM

• Film have the ability to move back forth through time, change
quickly from one location to another, and can present visually
materials which are subjective to the characters involved.
• They make us cry and laugh; motivates us to imagine and
also requires us to think.
• Films are sources of information and teachers use education
films as a strategy to teaching.
• Industrial and commercial companies use films to train their
workers and to advertise their company through commercials.
DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY
IN MOTION PICTURE
• Digital cameras use no film at all, but instead store
photograph as data on disk or memory card.
• The new technology allows them to gather
photographic images, feed them into a computer, work
with them, and print the end product as a photography.
• Modern digital cameras allow on-the-spot editing,
photographic enhancement, color shifts, and a host of
other controls.

• The PRODUCER and EXECUTIVE PRODUCERS are in charge


for raising funds to finance the project. They are responsible for
choosing the materials for the film, hire the director and actor.

• The DIRECTOR interprets the screen play and


translate it into visual terms. He sees to it that film
images can invoke the emotions and thoughts of the
moviegoers.

• The ASSISTANT DIRECTOR is in charge of


meeting the production schedule so that work
is done on time.

• The SCREENWRITER conceives the pictures,


dialogue, and actions of the film, then writes
them into a standard story format called
SCREENPLAY. The WRITER plots the story
then creates the characters who speak and
behave in a believable manner.

• The DEVELOPMENT EXECUTIVES are experts in


analyzing the structures, plot, and characters of
screenplay. They make suggestions on how to
make the film a success..

• UNIT PRODUCTION MANAGER is in charge of the


day-to-day supervision of the film projects. Sees to
it that all elements involved in the film production
are present during the filming.

• The DIRECTOR OF PHOTOGRAPHY is


responsible for realizing the visual aspect of the
film as designed by the director. He choses the
film, lenses, camera, and lighting techniques.

• The ACTORS learn the words, actions,


behavior, and mannerisms of the characters in
the screenplay.

• The PRODUCTION DESIGNER collaborates with


the director and director of photography to look for
colors, textures, shapes needed to support visual
look of the scene.

• The SET DESIGNER draws the detailed plans


and build models of the film sets.

• The COSTUME DESIGNER creates the


design of the costumes appropriate to the
characters, place, and time periods of the

• The HAIR and MAKE-UP ARTISTS create


hairstyles and apply make-up to the actors to help
them portray their convincing roles.

• CAMERA OPERATOR is responsible for cleaning,


loading, and setting up the camera. He constantly
adjusts his camera to make good shots.

• The PRODUCTION SOUND MIXER operates the


sound-recording, equipments. He decides on the
type and number of microphones to use.

• The BOOM OPERATOR uses a long pole


called “boom” to constantly adjust the distance
and angle of the microphones.

• The EDITOR make cuts on the work print of the film


and fuses them into an edited and understandable
whole version.
