Let us know first what tour is!
Tour – an arranged trip from the
point of origin to the point of
destination and back to the
source location for a period
greater than 24 hours.
Tourists – this refers to the travelers
whose stay at the destination or
attraction of choice lasts for more
than 24 hours, requiring lodging
and meals and other facilities.
During the old days, there were three
reasons why ancient people traveled:
•Danger
•Hunger
•Bad weather
History of Tour Guiding
In the records of history, tour
guiding ranks among the
world’s oldest profession.
Tour guiding started since
•Persian empire (approx. 559 BCE
to 331 BCE) – it encompasses
the modern day Iran, Egypt,
Turkey and part of Afghanistan
and Pakistan.
•Greek empire (1200 BC to 800 BC)
•Roman empire (31 BC to 1453 CE)-
Europe, Africa, and the Middle
East
•Middle ages (5 to late 15

•Renaissance (14 century to 17

century)
Early Tour guides were referred to:
•Pathfinders – a person who make
a path, way or route especially
through a previously unexplored
or untraveled wilderness.
• Bear leaders - In the 18th and 19th
centuries, a man who escorted young
men of rank or wealth on their travels,
The role of bear-leader blended
elements
of tutor, guardian, chaperon and
companion.
1840’s - Thomas Cook began
conducting tours to Paris and
later around Europe.
1850’s - Railroad tours were
already in operation.
Mid-nineteenth century -
steamship lines and railroads.

Cook is recognized
as the first travel professional
to organize a group of
travelers for a tour. 
•Post world war beginning with
the late 1940’s to early 1950’s –
marked a dramatic point for
tour operator.
