3. Using the concept of rank, show that the following equations are consistent
and hence solve them.

(i) 2x + y + z = 5
x+y+z =4
x − y + 2z = 1

x + 4y + 7z = 30

Ans: (i) x = 1, y = 2, z = 1 (ii)x = k − 2, y = 8 − 2k, z = k, k ∈ R

4. Find the value of k for which the system of linear equations

x + 2y − 3z = −2
3x − y − 2z = 1
2x + 3y − 5z = k

are consistent.
Ans: k = −3.
5. Find the value of k for which the system of linear equations

x+y+z =7

x + ay + z = 3
x + 2y + 2z = b
x + 5y + 3z = 9

are consistent. Will these have unique solution?

Ans: (i) When a = 2, the system of linear equations are consistent and
have unique solution.
(ii) When a = −1 and b = 6, the system of linear equations are consistent
and have infinitely many solutions.
